Another Financial Genious
I know I'm not the only one who read the article in February 2003 Excellence #117 about the '73 911T.
This self proclaimed "financial manager" managed to blow $130,000 building a 993 widebody with a 3.6 power plant. How in the world do these guys manage to mismanage their projects so badly? Jacks new car will kick this guys butt all over the track for a fraction of that cost. Hell, I'd put mine up against it any day. Nice yes, but $130,000?

I think what he did was..... "do" $130,000 worth of blow while managing his project.

With a $130k budget, I think I'd run out of things to spend it on. By the time I got half way there, I'd have a pretty cool car.

The drift I get is the demonstrated financial mangement (the car) may be indicitive of the current state of certain financial portfolios. Story reminds me of a Vette I once bought for 50% of the market price. During negotiation, I asked the owner how he had come up with his price. He replied that he was a buyer for a certain large department store chain and "knew about such things." Well, I agreed that he should know about such things and asked if he wouldn't take a hundred less for his pristine machine. He agreed that it was worth not having to answer the phone (which was ring off the hook) to accept a $100 less. Those were the days!

I saw it, but only skimmed the article and saw the $130,000 price tag (and something about the car not being finished yet!)!

i have the article here in front of me...he started with a $4400 shell and then purchased a carbon fiber 993 wide body kit for $8221.50. From there...it gets hazy. I guess the guy can spend his money on whatever he wants...im just curious how it ended up costing 130K.

Well, he had to have that body kit fit by someone. That takes time and money. One thing that I remember about the article was he spent $1000 on custom hats? Mine cost $300. I think the difference between you guys and him is, he doesn't do any of the work on his car. And if I were doing the work on his car, I'd want to get paid for it.

When you put your car on the cover of an international magazine AND you admit to being a financial manager AND you managed yourself out of $130,000 on a car that is not yet finished, has a 915 tranny, and a power to weight ratio less than a slightly modified 930 YOU WILL BE SCRUTINIZED.
I couldn't care less what this guy spends his money on, I'd just like to know HOW you could POSSIBLY spend that much on so little. FOR EXAMPLE - I was working soooo much during the construction of my car that ALL of the expensive stuff was farmed out to "experts". These guys charged me anywhere from $45 - $75 an hour. The bodywork and paint were done at a Porsche dealership for Christsakes. So I know a little about the cost of not doing things yourself. The end product cost a slight FRACTION of this fellas outlay. No carbo fiber 993 ulta-wide body, but hey it doesn't look all that different (and is probably faster). .

Hey Rarly, maybe you should submit an article to Excellence entitled "How to Build a Better, Faster Version of Last Month's Feature Car and Have Enough Money Left Over to Buy a Nice Used Ferrari!". Might have to shorten that title a little bit.

Hey Rarely,
For what it's worth if I had to choose between the two I would have to say that yours is the better of the two. Hey maybe you should contact this guys financial clients and show them not only what he spent THEIR money on but that you can do it better with less money. Maybe you would be their new financial advisor.
