Speed sensor signal question

I have been doing some clean up and diagnostic in an attempt to figure out why my car "cuts out" randomly for a half second at a time. The latest thing I have done is take a look at the signals the speed and position sensors are outputting. The position sensor is putting out about 10V peak to peak, and the speed sensor is putting out 5V P-P. The position sensor shows a very clear signal, but the speed sensor signal also has voltage spikes that it is picking up from the position mark on the crank.
I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if this is normal?
BTW, it is a 1988 3.2 engine.
