Replacing forst and second gear synchro
Since I just finished rebuilding my engine and I have the gear box out anyway I thought I might take a peak . I have first and second gear synchro and associated parts just in case as although not perfect, it is very drivable and got the parts as a while your in their.
I took the nose cone off last night and so far everything looks great , Fluid was in good shape ( I change it every 5 years or so ) when I drained it and not even film on the magnetic plug. from what I see so far ( fifth I think ) looks amazing. I wanted to go further and check for the loose race but I don't have the input shaft locking tool . I May find this hard to find in Canada to borrow or rent at a reasonable cost. Is there any tricks people use to substitute something for this tool so I can get the nuts off the end of the shafts ? I thought of locking the cv shafts somehow but I don't want to do any damage doing it wrong and this may not work anyway as I have LS. If I cant think of a workaround I might just reseal and slap it back in the car as the summer is a ticking by Any thoughts ? Thanks

Input shaft locking tool.........
Do you have any local Porsche shop in your area? I used the center piece of an old clutch disk and welded something to it. Shops or people throw the old and worn out clutch disk. I found mine in the trash bin of a local shop just in time for the scrap metal guy to haul them. After recovering the metal part with spline, I brought it to a muffler shop to weld a piece of tube.

Pictures of the holding device.......
This is how it looks before drilling holes on the tube. Or attach a long bar to counter hold it.

I've used an old clutch disc center clamped in a bench vise when the proper tool was not available. The bench vise simplifies the counterholding!

It's been awhile since I did mine, but I'm pretty sure John Walker told me to lock the tranny into a forward gear and reverse at the same time. Use the shift rod to put tranny in, say, 3rd gear then pull up on the 5-R selector by hand to engage reverse. This will lock the two shafts against each other so you can impact on the big stamped nut on the end without spinning them. The castellated nut is straightforward.
I assume this is the stage you are at if you are looking at your 5th gear still. The old clutch disc or splined holding tool will be needed to take the stamped nut off the input shaft after it is removed in order to get the gears off. That one is a challenge.
