Fuel Delivery Issue - 3.2L Carrera

I was out on a run this weekend and after a brief stop I went to start the car. Starter motor going, engine not starting. After a couple more attempts I figured I wasn't getting any fuel. On a fourth attempt I had my son engage the throttle from the engine bay as I turned the engine over and voila! ---- the car starts.

After a brief drive I noted an an upshift into second that I lost power for a half second or so and continued on. I noted this one more time just a short while after.

On a related note, in the past few weeks I have noticed that while at a constant speed on the highway the car would lurch for a millisecond or two --- kind of like the clutch was slipping. I am thinking that this is related.

I was able to drive home without any issues and had two more stops without any issues starting.

Any ideas on what this could be? Most likely culprits?

Cheers and thanks,
Kato

do you have a spare DME relay? It activates the fuel pump, etc. and can develop bad soldier joints that cause intermittent failures. Easy to rule it out by replacing with a spare

^ do some searching on DME relay. Sounds likely and similar to issues I had. You can jumper the pins to eliminate it but that wont help if its intermittant.

Love your Avatar! they just dont make movies like that any more.

+2, swap relay and keep us updated :-)

You should have a spare non-Uro one.

Yes --- I have spare relays. I will try this and see if there is an improvement. I should have thought of this but I've been out of it for quite some time. I've been enjoying the car without any major issues for awhile now.....

Thanks much.

Thanks .... yes .... classic. Aliens is my favourite Sci-Fi film. Early James Cameron work. When my kids and I watched Avatar they said, "hey. didn't they have those in Aliens" Referring to the machinery, of course.

I'm dealing with this in my 88 right now. I had the same lurches as you, then the car died. I got it to run briefly several times but not long enough to drive it. Eventually it wouldn't start at all. In my case it wasn't the relay. I've confirmed I have spark (after something of a wild goose chase) and now I'm preparing to test the fuel pump. Follow along at Broken down near Pt. Reyes, CA

Yes ... these fuel pumps are getting old!!!

Just to update ... yes ... it was the DME relay. Changed it over and no problems at all.

Cheers,
Kato
