Door Window and Quarter Window Frames 101
Hey guys,
I did a quick search on this topic and nothing jumped out at me. Could have been just the way I searched, though. So if there's a thread on this already, please point me in the right direction. What are the differences between the various door and quarter window frames and what years were these variations and on what models (E, T, S, RS, RSR, etc.)? I know SWB cars had different wing windows, some cars had aluminum, some were painted, etc. I could really use some help with this. I have a basket case 1970 911T with the wrong door window frames... probably because one door is from an SWB and the other is from a late 70's early 80's car. ![]() I guess I should also ask if mounting was basically all the same as well. I would hate to have to replace the doors completely! ![]() If someone can break it all down, or point me to a thread that already does, I would really appreciate. THANKS! S |

I've done lots of doors & window frames for '67 to '73 cars. Sorry I can't fill you in on what exactly you're asking, but I have a suggestion. If I were in your shoes, I'd look in the "for sale" or do a WTB advertisement for frames appropriate for your car & just buy them. I've never noticed much difference window frames for the LWB cars.

Your car should have bright aluminum trim (clear anodized, not polished). Coupes had fixed front quarter windows. I'm not certain what the cutoff date for vent wing windows on Targas was.

Was there any differences in the shape of the rear portion of the window frame, at the B-post? The portion that has sort of a "spoiler" on the trailing edge. |

Early coupes, through '68, had an opening wing window. The frames were heavy, steel and chrome plated. The front leg of the frame, the part below the door sill, is nearly as long as the middle frame leg. The rear edge of the window frame, the flair, is a separate piece that is screwed to the frame.
Later frames, '69 and later, are anodized aluminum and have fixed wing windows for coupes. They are much lighter than earlier frames and the front frame leg is very short, only about 6" long. The flair at the rear of the frame is part of its manufactured shape, not a separate piece. The clear anodized finish is not as shiny as chrome frames, and later frames were painted black.

I was under the impression:
Pre '68 were brass with vent windows '68 were aluminum with brass vent windows '69-89 were aluminum without vents I could be wrong but this is what I've read over the years. I own a '68 and I'm certain I'm correct about that year.

Yes, I was going from memory. '68 was a one year aluminum frame with vent window. And I do believe the early frames were brass, not steel.

WOW! Guys! Thank you! This is great information! Extremely helpful!
Does this hold true for quarter windows also? Do '69 to '89 all have the same mounting? |
