I'm curious about your choice of years. One an early car, the other a middle year car.

Agree with Jim. Greatly different cars from the outside.
No reason to look for a 74 unless you just like them as the outward appearances are the same as a later car. Buying a 76 or newer will get you a "rust proofed" car that looks the same as the 74. It was the first year of the big bumper cars. If you want the early style car, the 72 & 73 are more or less identical, except for the oil door on the outside on the earlier car. Has the cleaner look of an earlier car but with the long wheelbase. Joe

I'm looking too...saw an early Kathyrn Zeta-Jones movie on tape last night. I too, am puzzled about the years selection. I ended up with my car because I took a look at the then new '74 models. That look convinced me to look for a used 911...

Could be because they are smog exempt in CA.

73s are exempt, 74s still have to get smogged, at least for another year.

That is exactly right, the 73 is preferred because of CA smog exempt law. The 74 is exempt starting in 2003, so I am OK with that. But, I am really leaning in the direction of the 73 myself. For the 74, I would throw out the engine and get something different.

While it is true that that they started galvanizing in '76 or '77, the '74 doesn't have the thermal reactors, smog pump scene and has the more desireable exhaust of the mid-year cars. My 2.7 has had the updated head studs, tensioners, etc. and runs like a dream, but I do concede that many other 2.7 owners have not been so lucky...condition is extremely important with a mid-year car IMO.

You can find nice original 74 2.7RS's for much cheaper than 73 RS's, maybe you should seek one of those out

Just saw a descent looking 69 911 on Ebay today. Nice thing about that one is that its in Tucson and should not have a rust problem. (if its been here all its life that is) I like the look of the earlier cars but without the rust. Am backdating my 85 to look like a 69-73 model right now.

"Blue Juice" the name of the flick. Brit made, I believe. Had to be very early in KZ-J's career. Check your video store's oldies rack. I always thought a '74-77 911 would be a natural for a good transplant operation. The car itself relatively cheap, has a 915 gearbox...a natch for everything from SC power for a reliable daily driver to a 3.6 993 for a lightweight Q ship.

Re smog testing:
I'm not sure about other states but here in NJ I have a 72 on Historic tags, which has no test at all. I have another car (non P) an 85 on Collecter tags, this does involve a visit to DMV but is just to check the mileage for the driving restriction which is 5000 for two years. To qualify as a collecter it must be a car that was limited in its production (or all crashed and not many left) Jeff |

Talking about ’74 911’s, I noticed that the ’74 has smaller rear bumpers. My question is can I fit these to my ’76 911s without major changes?
