Boge self leveling struts
Should cars with Boge self leveling shocks be avoided or are they a good set up?
How can you tell if a car has them or just regular Boges? The absense of torsion bars?

The hydropneumatic is fine for as long as it works. Most owners convert to a regular set up when the problems start. Replacement parts are pretty scarce/expensive.

I think the main difference is the wishbones. It shouldn't be hard for a Porsche specialist to convert. Cost? I'd be guessing, but it wouldn't be cheap.

Thanks Milu, Is there a way to tell by looking at a car if it has the self leveling struts?

This is from Bruce Anderson's buying guide: The 911E was equipped with a self leveling Hydra-pneumatic front strut system instead of the torsion bars utilized by the other models. The pneumatic struts were prone to failures so many have been replaced with the conventional torsion bars. If you find yourself looking at one of these 911E's you should check to see if the struts have been updated to the conventional struts used by the other models. This can be important to you because when the pneumatic struts fail they are very expensive to replace. There's just not any info on this system floating around on the web! I know how to tell if it has self leveling suspension... wait until Joe gets his car tipper, slap that puppy on its side and see if it rights itself!

Thanks for the info. I did a search and found that the self leveling struts have a boot (similar to a fork boot on a motor cycle) instead of the metal strut cover. Seems the "Es" came standard with these and on the Ts and Ss it was an option.
