Finally!!

All,

After owning this car for a little over 5 years and doing a lot of work to it,
too much to list here, my car finally fired and ran yesterday. Not only did it
start and run, it really runs well, idles perfectly and in the few short runs
(up and down my driveway) is responsive and quick!

I have a charging issue which may be the voltage regulator as I had the alternator
tested when I took it off the engine ( and it tested fine), I have to adjust the clutch
and bleed the brakes, but should be on the road by the end of the month!

I'd just like to take a moment and thank Tony Donato for his excellent rebuild
services which extend far beyond just rebuilding these components. I thank
him for his knowledge and guidance without which I probably would have sold
this car on to the next unsuspecting victim.

I'd also like to thank local pelican Jeff Burger for his help, parts and moral support.
I'll be looking for some driving tips in the next few weeks Jeff!

All the hard work and frustration are just now starting to pay off!
Looking forward to many years with this car.

Cheers!
Steve

I will post pictures, but had a bit of a set back late today.
I was adjusting the clutch as it had a bit too much free play
and it seemed like the cable snapped. It didn't as it still moves the clutch arm.
Unfortunately, I think I have to drop the engine again as the pressure plate
might have let loose. Pedal went to the floor, like it wasn't hooked up,
but it is. I'll take some pictures of it and get some opinions before dropping
the engine/trans, but I think it's going to have to happen.

Here is a shot of the car in the garage last summer. Hopefully soon
I'll have more ( and better) shot with me actually driving.
Cheers!
Steve

Pedal/cable/clutch arm all move but the clutch doesn't disengage?

Possible roll-pin failure on the throw-out bearing arm?

It's possible, but I'll still probably drop the engine to investigate what
happened.

I'll do more investigation and keep you posted.

Peru Red

Is your Targa Peru Red ? Looks like it in the pix. One of my all time favorite colors...but I may be biased. My 1st Porsche was a 77S Targa in Peru Red....I kept it for 15 years and I still miss it.

Yep, It's Peru Red. When I got this car cleaned up, as it had been sitting in a garage
for many, many years, I really fell in love with the color. It just offsets the stainless
and chrome on the car.

Cheers!

Just got a chance to get the car in the air this afternoon.
Turns out my problem, while clutch related, isn't all that big a deal.
Turns out it's the clutch clevis on the release arm. Turns out that I have
the plastic one ( that I heard breaks all the time!) and I just have to replace
it with the improved metal one.

Here's a shot of the offending part with only one of it's two ears. The
other is somewhere in my garage, just couldn't locate it.

I'm going to get a cable too as I've been advised that it not that it won't
break, it's when.

Now onto this pesky charging issue. What voltage regulator will work
on the '74?

Cheers!
Steve

OK, Now that I have a handle on my charging issues and clutch issues
(parts will be here tomorrow!) I can't get any power to the starter.
I must have loosened up a connection when I pulled the footboard out
but for the life of me can't see any loose connections.

Anyone ever have an issue like this? The fuel pump will run and the CDI box
squeals so it's got power, just doesn't do anything when turning the key to start.
The battery is fully charged and if I get really close to the ign switch I can hear a
"click" but does not engage the starter. This is an early '74 car and only has 3 relays
and they're all in tight.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Steve

Steve,

Test the starter terminals for power during cranking. Use a test light to see if you are getting power. Another point of interest would be the 14-pin connector and ignition switch. I have a strange feeling that the culprit could be just the ground cable. And keep us posted.

Thanks Tony,

I'll test the starter tomorrow. I did check that all connections were on the starter'( they were) and did check the 24 pin connector.

Maybe if I unplug and plug it back in?

Hopefully, once i figure this out, I'll be driving!

Steve

OK everyone,

My car is now running and driving again! I had my friend Ralph come over to
help with another car I'm working on and had him check out why I was getting
no power to the starter. After a half hour or so he found that the big connector,
the one that hooks up the engine harness needed a good cleaning.
Once that was done she fired right up!
I got the new metal clevis from our host and the clutch has never felt better!

Al, I put the new regulator in, but still have a charging issue. I'll pull the alternator
and check my wiring there. Once I get that, it's just a few small adjustments and
I'll be on the road! I'll take a few shots of the car tomorrow ( she needs a bath!)
and post then.

Cheers!
Steve

Does your alternator light in the dash work? It needs continuity through it for the Alternator to work.

Hi,

The light is constantly on. I replaced the regulator as it was an inexpensive
experiment, that didn't work. So yes, the light works. I checked at the battery
and it's not charging.

I had the alternator checked while I had the engine out and it tested fine.
I guess my next move is to check the wiring to make sure I connected it
correctly. Then I'll have the alternator checked out again.

Thanks!
Steve

Great car..

You did good replacing the cable as well as the broken piece. Even if it never breaks they kink up after many years and give the clutch action a heavy feel.

OK, as promised, I gave her a bath this morning and parked out on the driveway
with the "other" cars.
Here are a few shots. The floor mats and carpets are still out as I have that parking
brake switch to sort out ( blinking red light on the dash)
I'll get to the alternator this week and hopefully will get on the road either the end of
the week, or next week. Looking forward to nice long drives!
Cheers,
Steve
