What was PO thinking. Custom Interior
My 78 911 was the PO project. It looks like he started a custom interior and now I'm trying to sort it out. The seats were recovered in leather as was the dash. Some mods were made with the center console. An aft center console was also made, but it doesn't fit well with the seats. Its just too wide. I suppose I could offset the seats a bit outboard. I have to decide if that's worth it.
I have two questions. What is the round hole in the lower center console for? In this picture you can also see a lower radio mount. I will use that for the radio and add a radio delete panel above. There I can add the A/C controls whenever I decide to put it back in. ![]() Next question is where do these speaker boxes go? Ever see something like this before? ![]() The seats are trashed. They have gotten wet during storage and the leather is stained. I should take them to a professional to see if they can be fixed and dyed. I like the cream color with the green inset. ![]() I need new carpet, door cards, rear rocker panels and a rear deck panel. I would like to do them all in the cream color of the seats. The door cards could be RS style. Any advice? Do I by a used interior and reupholster it or can it be made from scratch? Any experience would be appreciated. Thanks, Pete

Lower center dash hole is likely meant as an additional central speaker enclosure.
The other two custom speaker enclosures were built to fit in the left and right rear seat side panel areas. Installing them would render the rear seat backs either useless or unable to be folded down flat. Looks like PO was building the interior for a custom sound system. You can buy RS door cards through Pelican or through a number of suppliers (appbiz) who can likely make them any color or material you want. Otherwise buying used and having it upholstered is the other option. I bet the seats can be cleaned and dyed to match. Ice ice baby. (Love it JB) Cooper On edit, those other custom enclosures *might* be intended for the left and right front foot wells. |

Well the speaker boxes do fit up front on the footwells. There isn't much room for feet then. I guess I won't be needing them.
Anyone know a good upholster in Connecticut?

I actually like the center console and the ashtray delete. What I don't like is the quality of the work done. Stripping would cure that problem.

Thanks for tips. Leaning towards complete strip. In the meantime any advice on temporary interior door handles? It's hard reaching into the door to get it open!
Felipe, I'll pm you for shop contact. Ma is a bit far but not bad for the right shop. Thanks Pete

For temp handles, just attach the pull and the rod, if you have them. If not, just the rod. The pull will bolt right onto the bare door, no problem. I ran that way for a few weeks while rebuilding my doors. The little rod is $50 new but you can get it from partsheaven or elsewhere used for $5.

Where in CT are you? If you are anywhere near Hamden your more than welcome to come see mine and brainstorm. I had a similar issue, my car was gutted for track duty, with a burgundy dash. I did the RS carpets in black, black RS leather door cards with black pulls.....I do not have the center console and in my opinion is the only way to make it look correct when you go multi color RS inspired.
