Need some inspection tips

I usually only participate on the 944 board, but I need some advice.

I have a local PCA member that is looking to trade his 1973 911E Targa for my 951. My 951 is in excellent shape, in fact it won a concurs event last June. It’s an 87 with coil over all the way around and, many other performance modifications.

The problem is my family has always had 911’s; in fact I was shuttled back and forth to grade school in a 73 E. That being said I have been on a quest to find a good example for some time. I don't track my 951, I probably should but I am more of the "touring type."

Sorry for the long story, but what I really need are some things to look for when I inspect it later this week. Where should I look for rust? In the floor pans, heat exchangers? I have been reading the 911 archives all afternoon to try and get all of the information that I need.

Thanks in advance.

Worst place for rust on these old ones, in my opinion, is the door sills, just behind and at the bottom of the latch panel. It's really hard to fix this without taking the fenders off, or at least cutting up the fenders and latch panels pretty badly. The "reinforcement," a short vertical brace inside the wheel well, just behind the latch panel, must not be rusted out. Also, all of the dealer A/C installations that I have seen involve unspeakable mutilation of sheet metal.

Easier to fix, but don't forget the battery boxes and areas near them. God bless gel cell batteries!
