Hello Pelican,
Been reading posts for help for last 3 years thank you. I don't post much but need some help. My 86 3.2 Carrera has been bulletproof since purchasing 3 years ago. I put about 3500 miles on it a year. Last week it sat for a week, so this week with picture perfect 80 degree weather I drove it 4 days straight. Today with a 109k on the dial it stalled twice. Tried the search and see a few conflicting posts. 1) I drove for 30 mins, full temp, 15 miles like normal just fine, then I approach a hill pop out of second and come to stop calmly and it stalls. After 2 tries the car restarts. I drive another few miles and it drives fine. 2) I left again let it idle to norm, drive 1 mile not even warm (80 degrees outside) push clutch in again from 2nd to neutral and stalls. 2 tries and it fires. I drive my 14 miles back home just fine. What do you think? I put 92 octane in last night. Plugs are good. What can check?

ICV, mine was doing the same, got one from Rock Auto, pretty inexpensive.

Definitely Check the Idle Air Control Valve. Remove it, spray it profusely with brake or carb cleaner. If there is improvement, order a new valve. They never seem to last very long with just a simple cleaning. It's an inexpensive part. You can also try adjusting your idle with the Idle screw.

Thanks much for the prompt replies.
I will remove the ICV and give it a good cleaning. If not I will replace, looks like Rock Auto does have it for around $150. It's this one correct? ![]() If you want please pm your address and I will mail you each a free wide911.com decal pack 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Turbo Look: Stickers for helping.

Question - it doesn't seem that your car is starting right back up after stalling -- if that's the case, and if you have a spare DME relay (always a good idea to have a spare DME relay), I'd try swapping out the relay before messing with the ICV --

I don't have a spare DME, but that is also a good point. Yes after stall it took two hard cranks before it started again. Seeing that that relay is in-expective might order that too.
Thanks same goes for anyone who helps, send me a PM and get a wide911 sticker pack! ![]()

I second on the DME relay. I had a similar issue where the car ran fine until it warmed up. Once warmed up it would sputter backfire and eventually die. If I let it sit it would run perfect again until it reached normal operating temp. Turned out to be the DME relay. I know these are not your exact symptoms but when the car dies for no apparent reason the relay is always suspect.

no reason to pull the seat to get to the DME relay, just pull it all the way forward

How does it drive in the rain or high humidity?
I had the same problem and it was a cracked distributor cap.

Honestly only drove it once in rain. But been dry for a week low humidity, checked the cap and looked ok.

There is also a "throttle closed" microswitch. 911 606 013 03
You might check its adjustment and for proper operation (open / closed circuit at the electrical connector). |

You may not be able to see any visible cracks though. When I was was going through my no start issue, I went through extremely extensive testing only to find out it was the common DME relay. Im not one to throw parts at it as a means of troubleshooting, but the relay can cause may strange issues and they are known to fail. I would be inclined to change it and if thats not the problem you have a spare which you should keep in the glovebox as most Carrera owners do anyway. It does not sound like a mechanical issue at all though so I would not get sidetracked with a valve adjustment, however that may be a good idea once you get this issue sorted out if an adjustment is due. You can also check the ICV fairly easily. Just turn the key to the run position and you should feel it vibrating and Do NOT mess with the idle screw. They are usually sealed on the motronix cars anyway. The idle speed is controlled by the DME and if everythings working properly the car will idle just fine.

Glad it worked out and was something simple (KISS)
I have a spare in the car and after 395,000 km have never needed it.

Hey guys well I took the car out today and it quit good. Drove it 20 miles started and turned off parked fine. Drove it home and got a few blocks from the house and it quite during 40 MPH. I was able to safely pull off the side and get a tow home.
No spark to plug 1. So after replacing the DME it's something else. Coil? Some other ignition related issued. Any troubleshooting ideas? I pulled the distributor cap and everything looks ok there as well. P.S. I pay in stickers, those who helped above and PMd I mailed them out this week.

Similar problem on my 84 today, it got warm and died, and then would start and sort of run and die again, I swapped out the DME relay and no fix, fresh fuel and plugs a few months ago and fresh gas last week.
