The nest: another update

It's been awhile since I've posted anything about my progress, so here's some more pics with my new digital camera.

The throttle bodies cleaned up nicely after alot of elbow grease. Here's a side by side comparison.

The cylinders are cleaned up and free of leaves.
The engine shroud is clean and reinstalled along with the fan/alternator. The MFI pump has been reinstalled as well.

We also turned it over by hand and via the starter. Everything seemed fine except for one sticky spot about 180 degrees away from Z1. After a revolution or 2 it freed up. Any clue what that could be?

next up: reinstalling the oil return tubes, exhaust, a couple peices of sheet metal, a valve job and it should be close to ready to put back in the car.

Am I missing anything?

edit: I've got pictures of the throttle bodies without the stacks in my dad's camera, I'll post them when he gets home.

Great Job! It's nice to see another MFI engine being brought back to life.

It's been how long since I bought this thing and I've never noticed this.. the left side and the right crankcase's have different casting #'s

the left is 3R and the right is a 4R. Is this normal or do I have a true bastard of a car?

One of my 2.4 cases has 3R and 4R halves, while the other has 4R and 5R. I think it is quite normal.

I'm still awfully worried about you starting that engine without tearing it down- all that water most certainly caused corrosion and heavy oil sludge. Have you at least pulled the sump plate to see what lurked in there?

How did you clean your plastic stacks? They look great!

I pulled the sump plate and found sludge but otherwise the metal that I could see in there was in really pristene condition.

As for the stacks I just used foaming engine degreaser, It worked like a charm. It only took me about 30 minutes to get them that way. The throttle bodies on the other hand took my 5+ hours.

Well if you are going to do it- consider running some serious amounts of chem-tool through the car, and be super-cautious doing the first startup. Turn over with no ignition to build oil pressure before trying some spark.

By the way, your motor is starting to look really good!!!

hmm.. chem tool... I'll have to do that.

I did plan on the no ignition startup.

I'm half planning on having to tear down the engine anyway wiht the unknown condition it's in.

Thanks... I wish I could say the same for the interior.. it's still a mess
