87 seat adjustment not working

The rear tilt seat adjustment motor in my 911 Carrera is not functioning and I guess, it's the switch.
Can anybody tell me how to get the seat lower without replacing the switch, or does anybody have a switch fore sale?
Thanks,
Thomas

Take a Meter and check if you have 12V on one of the wires. If not, check the fuse. If you do have 12V then disconnect the switch and measure across the terminals if the switch works or not. To if the motor is OK and the switch is bad you can use a jumper between the 12V terminal and the terminal to move the seat down to move it without the switch.

that switch sounds dirty. They can be gently pulled from their housing on the seat. IIRC, the switch has one or 2 small holes on the body (I don't know why), and a few Pelicans have had success by spraying electrical contact spray into those holes and working the switches vigorously to make them come back to life. There's some good info available if you do a search.

These switches both get dirty or develop enough corrosion to cease working all the time.

Prior to using the disassembly method in the link; pull the swtich assy out further than in the photo, surround the bottom and back of the switch with rags or paper towels, cause you will want to spray the switch liberally with electrical contact cleaner while actuating the switch in all directions. Prior to tesing, allow to dry or blow it dry with compressed air. Now try the switch.

I have also pulled the switch apart and manually cleaned the contacts, but that is more a pita, as there are tiny ball bearings used in the assy, that are easily lost.

Dismantler list these switches on fleabay all teh time; and they want an arm and a piece of your leg for one...>$120

I recall there may be a manual adjustment under the seat to raise and lower a seat. Recollection is its turned with an Allen wrench. If I can find my old manual ill double check recollection. That may be a temp fix for you

Whattrouble, the rear most switch is for Lumbar adjustment.

Up and down move location at your lower back up/down.

"forward/backward" move the lumbar support In and Out for more back support.

cooper911-

thanks for mentioning lumbar support- from my manual, seems the switch for that, if available, would be in the third/last position, behind the bunwarmer (seat heater) switch-anyway, no lumbar for me

my front switch tilts the entire seat, with the axis being the front of the seat- it tilts back, but not up unless i goose it with some contact cleaner- some disassembly required, apparently, as per bell

second round switch- the up and down arrows produce tilt of the entire seat, with axis being rear of seat cushion- the forward/reverse arrows should control backrest position - the problem is that the switch produces motor sounds but no change in position of seat back

bentley doesnt do much to describe the workings of the motor involved- anybody have a handle on this?

The contact cleaner trick is like magic. It was the first trick I learned when I joined this forum 6 years ago and it solved my seat troubles right away. Before you consider more drastic steps follow the advice above and try this trick for yourself, you might be pleasantly surprised by the results.

so far so good with the contact cleaner- liberal dose in front switch allowed me to adjust the tilt of the seat- the "fix" for me only lasted a couple of minutes each time afetr i sprayed the switch, so will consider disassembly

on the other hand, the switch for raising/lowering the seatback is fine- it works, and i can hear the motor working- but it is not moving the seatback up or back-it just kind of groans- anybody know how this is geared?- possible loose drive gear on motor shaft??- what else might have come undone??

thanks guys

Gents, can anyone tell me exactly where to find the hole or holes to squirt the contact cleaner into? I've got my switches pulled out far enough to see the whole thing, but I don't see where to point the contact cleaner straw. Any help would be appreciated.

edit: I see there is a hole on each side of the cube, but the holes aren't open, it looks like they have a little white tab or something filling the opening. I don't see any holes that are open.

edit again: never mind. The open holes are only on 2-way switches. The holes are for the mounting tabs on the white plastic ball-bearing holders inside the switch. You can only do the contact cleaner spray method on 2-way switches, because 4-way switches use all 4 holes for mounting. I had to take my seat out of the car, remove my switches and disassemble them for cleaning.
