Mecum auction '79 930 w/64 miles... can't drive it

Watching Mecum auction the other day. '79 930 with 64 miles went under the gavel. Believe it sold for $360,000. Discussed it with a friend who's Porsche savvy. He said a classic Porsche with very low miles like that cannot be driven. If it is, it will quickly fall apart. Really?

no, it will be fine it if was maintained (ie run every once and a whole so things do not rust on the inside) the main issue will be dry rot on rubber parts, other than that it will be fine.

Its value will probably decrease $1 for every mile added. Moreso if it collides with a bridge. But it's up to the owner what he does with it. Structurally, should be fine unless a PPI wasn't performed.

Nonsense. I would change brake fluid though and check them very good before a drive.

The announcers said it had been in to have all the fluids flushed…changed…etc..thoroughly inspected…

That's crazy though, 64 MILES?!!! How is that even possible for a 1979 car? I'd think just rolling it around occasionally over 37 years would put at least that much on it!

Over 37 years...
Averaged a hair over 1.7 miles a year.
Consumed maybe 5 gallons of fuel---assuming miles were driven miles

...begs the question, if car is pushed / engine off, does odo rotate?

I remember one of the Magnus Walker videos with a 76 or 77 Turbo that had sat for several years prior to purchasing. He talked about changing the fluids and driving it from LA to Monterey the next weekend.

RANT: On.

This stuff makes me angry.

Another rich guy buying something, not for the love of the experience, but to try and make/bank $$ furthering all of the enthusiasts without bottomless pockets away from attaining their hobby dreams. THis nonsense over the last 5 years has made my car (mostly the parts) go from very affordable to me to it has a busted cylinder...should I sell it now?

Rant: off.

As far as a car sitting, getting the fluids changed and being road worthy...not the case. Mine was maintained with an open checkbook, put away for 9 years, I changed the fluids...and it proceeded to self-destruct over the following 5 years to the tune of well north of $10k in parts and repair receipts...

I sold my well maintained '85 to a guy in the Netherlands so I could make room for my sister's '88 which had been sorely neglected for 10+ years. Had to be trucked up from Atlanta due to it's sorry mechanical state. She bought it new & it has only has 36,220 miles on it. It's on the road again & runs perfectly BUT this is what I had to do to get it road worthy:
· replace oil return tubes
· replace oil supply line rt bank
· new gas tank
· new alternator
· alternator & A/C belt
· charge air conditioning
· refurbish fan & housing
· new fuel injectors
· flush fuel lines
· new fuel filter
· bleed brakes
· change transaxle fluid
· oil & filter
· new spark plugs, cap & rotor
· change out all fuses
· new DME relay
· replace lid shocks
· clean carpets / seats
· new battery
· new sound pad
· install headlight relays
· clean headlight lenses
· repair sunroof
· replace speed & reference sensors
· replace torn CV boots

Every single new 911 Turbo sold was sold to a "rich person" just like the 2016 911 Turbo. Poor folks don't buy them.

This car was obviously bought as an "investment" just like some people buy rare guns or artwork. It belonged to that person and he did not use my money or yours. I can't care less why someone would buy a car and not drive it. Personally that is sounds stupid to me so I don't do that.

If I buy a new gun, I shoot it. I don't spend my money on "art" because I think every Picasso I have ever seen is garbage and I would not pay a penny for his crap. That is my opinion, I could be wrong. I don't think so but that is yet another opinion.

What if every single individual that ever existed had exactly the same opinion. Would it be a functional world? Or, do different opinions make "the system work?"

PS. I happen to like Picasso. He did what he wanted art-wise and F everyone. Perhaps his attitude was his "true art."

Only the very rich can afford to buy an expensive car and not drive it. Don't worry, that vast majority of the population prefer to drive the car they bought.

You are entitled to your opinion on art. Virtually none of the modern "art" like Picasso, Jackson Pollock and tons of others produce of "art" is stuff I want to own or even have to see. I don't like them so I don't buy them, but I drive my Porsche.

Here is a photo of my 911 to make this thread fit the technical forum.

How have prices for parts changed dramatically over the last 5 years.
Any examples?

I'm in awe of how cheap parts are for these cars (For the expendable stuff from tierods to plug wires). My 95 Land Cruiser has more expensive parts.

How about, "I can't imagine buying such a beautiful motor car and not driving it more than 64 miles", rather than being angry about it.

In fact, why don't you remortgage your home and buy it and drive the snot out of it? That will show...er, everyone?

Honestly, stop now...

The car has really only been driven 30 miles, Porsche Quality Controlled the 930s for about 25-30 miles before delivering it to a dealer or customer. You should never see a 930 of that era with less than 25-30 miles on the Odo. 911s were a little less sructinized. What someone does with their car is their business. For all we know he bought two 930s, drove the $hit out of the first and just stared at this one. This surely doesn't mean this car can't be driven or enjoyed..., it's only money.

I was a manager at a Pontiac-GMC store in the 80s. When it was announced that the FIERO was going out of production, a guy bought a new GT and then came with a flatbed to take it home. Said he was gonna store it and not drive it.
If he did, and still has it it's worth maybe 5,000. Cost new 4 times that.

As for the 930-- think of all the fun times wasted. Sad.

And in addition to it's pitiful, garage queen existence, that poor car has been forced to suffer the indignity of being left in its as delivered, ridiculously neutered, and full of compromises state (lame turbocharger, intercooler, exhaust, a/c system, etc., etc., etc.)!
