911sc oil tank sending unit stray wire

Just picked up my '78 911sc from the shop where he took the engine out to do a reseal and new clutch.

While crawling around, I noticed today a stray brown wire on the left (passenger side) .. The other end appears to attach to the oil tank sending unit. I'm assuming its a ground wire. Where does this loose end go to? Can I re-attach it myself?

Thanks for your help.

Normally the wires to the oil level sender come from the rear tail light harness as a pair in vinyl sheathing
After 38 years, who knows what has been done back there.
Is the insulation more of a cloth wrap than a plastic? (it should be)

Thanks Dennis
I had a chance last evening to check it again...the wire has a plastic insulation.. but I surmise its been worked with before in its 38 year history.

I"m thinking I can re-attach this relatvily easily though. Where does the ground actually terminate in the real tail light harness? and how is that best accessed, ie: do I remove the rear taillight assembly or is there a ground spot within the engine compartment? (pictures are helpful if you have any). Or alternatively can I reattach this to any good body ground point ?

If you know it is the ground wire, then attach it to a good body ground.
Normally it goes to the tail light wiring harness where it splices in with the other grounds back there and has one grounding point in the tail light area.

Oil tank CKT.

For our M/Y 86, there are two wires.

1. White/red.

2. White.

According to the factory manual,
there should be a ground stud near the taillight housing.
