Post How do you open the fronthood?

Hello,
I have finally bought a cheap 72' 911 that needs a lot of works but with minimal rust. This is my first porsche and it does not come with an operating manual. so the first thing I need to ask is how do you open the fronthood?. I popped the hood but was not able to find the lever, like that in a Honda, to release the hooks of the front hood. Is there a way to open it without the lever?. Thank you and god bless. Andrew.

I don't know if it's the same on your car, but the lever is under the lip of the hood a little to the left of the Porsche crest. I need to push the hood down a little while moving the lever to the right to open it.

If it's anything like the 914s from that era you just have to push with your firngers toward the read of the car on the part that is still latched.

front / | push the front part this way -->

That should do it.

Pop the hood with the cable release. Go to the front of the car. Directly down from the point of the hood crest, place your cupped fingers under the curve of the trunk lip. Feel the flat piece that pushes upwards? Now lift the lid! Works that way on my '72 911. Hope yours works the same.

Andrew, you are just the kinda guy I have been looking for, new owner of a 72 911, and hopefully it is a "T" If it is you could be the grand prize winner of one, original, very used, 1972 911T owner's manual. It's yours for the asking, no charge, I just want to see it go to a good home and it looks like you can use it. Send me an e-mail if interested. Only one condition, I better not see it end up on e-bay!

Heh same here, although mine is in german and its a bit worn.

Andrew, just pop the hood with the latch inside the car and then slide your hand from the left side of the hood to the right, the part which your hand hits is the lever that needs to be moved to right. If it does not open, try pressing the hood a bit more shut and the try pressing the lever again.

Where do you guys find the final release lever that moves left and right? On my '72 S, under the front trunk lip resides a flat plate. I push it UP, and the trunk lid can then be lifted. I'm just back from the garage, and believe me, this mechanism has no left or right movement. Maybe with the '74 and later cars you move a lever to the right? I'm puzzled here...

I'm with you on this one pwd.
While we're on the topic of opening things, I seem to have a new problem with my petrol tank- the manual says it should hold 60 or so litres, but i can only squeeze in a few litres before it comes spewing back out the flap on the rear quarter that I pump it into. Am I doing something wrong??

Matt...your spewing problem puzzles me. Is the tank already full? Maybe a defective gauge? Something clogging up the filler neck? I never fill with a fully flowing gas pump handle, and I listen as I pump, can usually hear as the tank approaches full. Maybe somebody else knows more. Sure hope so. Gawd...just READ your post again...I mean, really read it. "Flap on the rear quarter"...hahahahaha! Okay, you GOT me!

REAR QUARTER?? Didn't I read that's the oil filling port on some model years? And that it was changed because people were pumping gas into it?

Not "some" model years, George...only one, 1972. Yeah, Matt was joking. Teach me to read too quickly, he got me good!

When I got my first 911 I ended up phoning a mate in Germany to ask how to open the engine lid!

I felt kinda dumb!!

Whoops! Sorry I forgot =) that my car has a 74- front end with the shorter hood. So I guess I don't know how it is with older ones. (My car is -72 with newer front)
