Oil pressure sender switch & thermostat questions

I am doing some preventative maintenance while the engine is out and I am putting in some new gaskets.

2 issues:
1) The oil pressure switch sender, purchased from pelican, is much longer than the old one and was missing the crush gasket. I have to call them and get this but there are no other gaskets right? It was not screwing in easily, either this one is too long or it is just gunked up on the inside.

2) When replacing o-ring for the oil thermostat, I had a hard time getting the thermostat up. Once out, there was this orange crud surrounding it. It felt like gasket sealant. If I am replacing the o-ring, do I need any other gaskets or sealant?

That is strange, it should be the red one like the one I just found on the parts section. At least on my 3.2.

As far as the CRUD, that does not belong there, remove and clean, take care when removing do not mar the metal you want a good even seal to the thermostat.

Just make certain it and the proper switch are both torqued to spec. DO NOT OVER TORQUE. especially the switch it will damage the crush washer and cause a leak

Note when you re-place the breather hose make sure it seats all the way and the clamp at the correct location. there is a notch on the breather the hose goes over, if the clamp sit on that you will have a leak and a big mess.

Hope this helps,

Jim

My switch looked like the one Jim posted...

FOR sure do not overtorque ANY of the nuts on the thermostat..use the green Viton O-Ring, also.

Best!

No need to put any sealant on the thermostat, just install the "latest" green "O" ring and you'll be fine !
As far as the oil switch goes i bought one locally at my Auto Parts supplier and it looks like Jim's as well ...

While your engine is out,you may want to remove your engine mounted oil cooler and replace the three rubber seals, get the "latest" green ones as well !

Cheers !

oil pressure switch

Can you get just the oil pressure switch sealing washer? While my engine is out I am doing all that I can to stop oil leaks. The crush washer on my switch was not re-usable, but I don't see the washer in PET.

Is it one of those things were the washer only comes with a new switch?

Thanks,
Paul

NeedSpace,

It is critical that the new pressure switch has the same thread as the old unit. The length of the thread section for the pressure switch should not be a problem as long as the unit sits snug when you hand tighten it. Do not over torque it because the construction and material are not that strong like a similar size bolt. If you torqued it as 10-mm x 1.0 pitch bolt, you will have a big surprise!!!! A few DIY'ers had committed this blunder.

you fine it's not a real crush gasket (one time use only) so you can use the old one again. The O ring is the sealing device not torque on the nuts, clean and lube the new O ring and your good to go. BTW all the oil senders will leak at some point, you can install an extension pipe and nipple to rase the sender a couple inches to make the next time you change it, it will be easer to change,

Thanks James...this was a few years ago so it worked out ok. I don't get a stitch of oil there anymore.

That said, I have other oil problems....lol
