R Front Bumper on a backdated 74-89??
I was all excited to start fitting the FG R front bumper on my 84 and it wont fit? The bottom of the bumper hits the chassis.
Seems like my options are to cut out a piece of the chassis where the interference is - like they do to allow venting for a front mount oil cooler. Or cut an inch or so off the bottom of the bumper. Love to see some pics of what others have done.

Seems like there's a lot of nomenclature confusion on bumper styles.
Could you post a picture of the FG R bumper you're referring to?

Please see below
I guess this is just a 65-68 non s bumper too? I would think folks that have installed "S" bumpers would have the same interference but I could not find any info in a search. Pretty sure I saw some one deal with it at least once. ![]() ![]() The bottom center of the bumper interferes with the tub a little. Thanks to you forcing me to figure out how to fit it up there pretty tight ![]()

![]() Red circle is where the interference is Backdate Front Bumper Fitment Issues Interesting - he is fitting a steel factory bumper in the above thread. Maybe its just the thickness of the FG and maybe slightly different shape that causes the interference.

Erik,
That's my thread you are referring to in the above post. I can tell you the R bumper curved under the body without much space left. You may need to lower yours a bit from the hood line to give you some extra space at the bottom. This (could be almost a 1/4") gap will be closed up by the front bumper to body rubber seal anyway. If lowering it doesn't give you enough space, trimming the bumper will definitely help. You will never see it when the car is on the ground. But before you trim it, try adjusting it some more. The only reason I needed to trim mine was to clear the front AC condenser and cage. Good luck.

Thanks Lou
Yeah I need get an adjustable positive mount worked out so I can see exactly where it needs to be. I think a few gentle hammer taps a little sanding on the bottom of the bumper and an extra 1/4" on top will give me the room.

Erik,
We make an R Front bumper and have supplied around 10 mouldings that have been fitted to Impact Number cars with the SC Cross Panel. Apart for there being a gap between the front of the bumper and the slam panel they should fit without problem. (we make a filler panel to close this gap.) I think you may need to make the bracket a little longer and slide if forwards. It look as if you have IB fenders and you will need to make a filler panel to make the part of the arch that is missing and you could adjust this to suit the position of the bumper. Somewhere buried in our Workshop we have a hardwood hammer form to make these parts and I will see if I can dig it out. When you come to modify the bonnet catch we have found that trying to extend the lever is a pain. We now lengthen the hook so that the bonnet will open further so you can reach inside and operate the lever more easily. Last edited by chris_seven; 09-18-2016 at 07:10 AM.. |

![]() Hey Chris Oh BTW the pliers showed up yesterday??? weird how the first piece came so fast. Any way I am using the steel TS extensions so its kind of a cart before an egg. Need the hood to line up the bumper to line up the TS housings :-) I think this will work. Picked up a HF Rivnut tool so I can make some mounts with adjustment. Will post results.

I'd rather cut a glass bumper then dig into a chassis

![]() This is a 1982 SC which we converted to look similar to a 1967 SWB car. The front bumper is our 911R Style panel and it bolts straight on, it didn't need to be cut or modified in any way. The front cross panel hasn't been changed at all so having to cut either the bumper or the shell hints at a problem with the moulding. ![]() |

Chris that looks fantastic. Hard to believe that is an SC
Wish I could of ordered your bumper. I got tied up helping my oldest with calculus homework yesterday so did not make much progress - hope to have an adjustable mount set up soon so I can see what I have.
