Tire feedback: 225/45-17 & 255/40-17

I've been looking at getting a new set of wheels. Still doing research there but I think these are the tire sizes I'll land on.

Wanted to get some feedback on tire choices.

First I was a little surprised the RE11 was not offered in these sizes. They make a 235/45-17 and a 245/45-17.

There seems to be a new tire -- Michelin Pilot Sport A/S3+ -- that came out spring of '16. The ratings on TireRack are pretty good. The numbers look better than some of the summer tire choices. I'm not sure how much to trust these numbers though. Anyone have this tire? Any feedback?

Some other choices I've looked at...
  • BFGoodrich g-Force COMP-2 A/S
  • Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Position
  • Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06
  • Kumho Ecsta 4X II

I'm running the Continental ExtremeContact DW on my 16x6/7's now. Not a bad tire. Never had Contis before putting them on the 911. Had them for 5 years now. Only picked them because of tire shop recommendation. Put a set on Contis on my wife's Highlander and I've been disappointed in those.

In general I've had a lot of good luck with Michelin in the past so my inclination is to go with the Pilot Sport A/S3+ but I'm open to suggestions.

I really don't have a reason for running an all-season tire. I do drive the car in the winter and we do have some cold days where the highs are 30-40º F but not that many. Temps in the 30's in the mornings is not unusual though. I certainly won't be driving the 911 in ice/snow.

You can't buy happiness, but you can buy car parts which is kind of the same thing.

That Bridgestone is a runflat. You really want those?

I doubt it. Never had a runflat on any car before so I've never even though about it to be honest. They seem to be a popular choice on TireRack so I put them on the list.

Edit: Actually, I went back and looked at it and I posted the wrong Pole Position. I believe the correct one is the S-04 Pole Position. Thanks for catching that!

I'm running the Yokohama AD08 R's in those sizes on my Euromeister 17's and they're awesome. They're pretty sticky tires though, which is fine for So Cal where we see no rain or bad weather, but maybe not so good for winter driving in GA!

I had a set of Hankook R-S3 in 225/50-17 and 255/40-17 on my '87 Carrera, I was very impressed by the performance on both street and track. Spirited back road driving, AX and DE. I was very surprised on how well they worked in the rain, I did 130mph on TWS during flash flood rain with no aqua planning. My current Toyo R-888 are more sticky, but I believe the R-S3 is the best allround tire!

Well, we are known to get some 'frog strangler' spring storms, so I do care about wet performance.

I've thought about R compound tires before but my suspicion is they are not practical around here as a road tire. I could be wrong though... that's why I'm asking for opinions.

I'll add them to the list to consider. Thanks!

I'll add a thumbs up for the Hankook Ventus R-S3's also. This is what I installed on my HRE wheels when I refinished them (225/45 front and 255/40 rear). Very happy so far.

I went with Continental DW. BIG rain grooves, I have driven from Oregon to Ca, for several Porsche events. Very pleased, a real value for the money. I have an M491 with 17" Braids.

225/45 & 255/40 x17is a sweet spot for 911 tire sizes
the A/S3 is an all season tire, you can certainly run them but is that what you really want?

Most of us want a nice sticky tire and will gladly give up cold nasty weather performance and ultimate milage,

The extreme perf tires won't be the best in the cool conditions you describe but they won't fall apart either and your not likely to be bushing the envelope in those conditions any way.

best stick at shirtsleeve temps will be from RE71, * Spec, or Rival, some even use true R's like RA1, these tires will all have relatively short lives

below that there are lots of excellent tires which Tire rack rates pretty fairly

I bought a set of cooper RS3-S tires

I bought them because since they were just entering the market they were almost giving them away. I needed some temporary tires to fit on rims while adding big flares, and the. I figured I'd resell them.

It turns out that I have been EXTREMELY happy with them on the street, and am very impressed with them in the wet. ( I've even done a couple of track days on them)

They were designed for Roush for their mustangs.

Treadwear rating is 300 (estimated 32k miles)
I checked the sizes and they come close to what you need:

225/45/17
245/40/17

My $.02. I am using 16s if that makes a difference.

I am running Toyo RA-1s on the street and they are great, but they are definitely a fair weather tire.

I had a pair of Bridgestone S0-3s and hated them. They trammed like crazy. Drove me nuts. They look the same as the S0-4s with the huge grooves in the center. Finally got rid of them. Maybe it was my light weight car? Hopefully others will chime in who have used them.

+1 on Conti's DW.

The only thing is the fronts are short so they wear out twice as fast compared to the rears.

Ride and Control quite adequate for Aggressive Street use. For Track I would go either first two. Oh yeah quite to boot :-).

Other complaint is Conti's are skinnier vs Goodyear in the same size

The A/S3+ struck me because it seems to have as good or better marks as many of the summer tires. That's why I'm not sure how much to trust those numbers. You would think by looking at that data they would be as sticky as some summer tires but I don't see how that's possible with a tread rating north of 500.

I'm running the Conti DW now, so no issues with running a summer tire.

I have the previous Michelin A/S3 (no +) in 16" on mine, great tires. Incredible wet grip. At the time the non-plus were introduced, Michelin hyped them as an all season that was better than most summer tires. Since I do drive year around in Western Oregon in cool, wet conditions as well as very dry summers, that seemed ideal to me. I love them, will buy another set when I'm done with these, and will probably put them on my Audi when I next need tires.

The thing with these is that you don't have to compromise much if any at all - summer traction and cool weather grip in the same tire. Made in USA to boot.

I had to look up which manufacturers were German. I'm not sure if nationality matters.

I think Michelin has a plant in Tuscaloosa, AL. If I let that factor into the equation I would never buy a Michelin tire, and for me that's a much bigger deal than what country the tire manufacturer is headquartered in.

I have had two sets of BFG tires on my 85 in 16" the first set were definitely summer only, They have changed the compounds on the newer tires and they are better in the little rain we get here in the southwest.
