A couple of dumb questions about my rear spoiler!
My 86 has a deck lid spoiler that was added by the original owner. After reading a thread from this past August, I think it's a Turbo spoiler rather than a Carrera spoiler. The rear part of the base, where it attaches to the lid, is a fair distance from the standard Carrera air grill, which would allow the spoiler vase to fit over a larger hole in the lid for an inter cooler. Anyway, at some point the deck lid was painted, and not only is the shade of white a bit off but there is a run near the right edge. I want to fix this, but I also would like to see what the car looks like without the rear spoiler. So, the dumb question is how to remove the spoiler. It looks to be attached by a bunch of 4 mm bolts and nuts, but the only way I can see to get a wrench on the bolt heads is to drop the air conditioning condenser out of the way and reach through the original air grill opening with a box end wrench. Is there another way?

Banned but not out, yet..

All that to see what it will look like? There are thousands of pics here that will show you what your car will look like, probably in the same color. Sounds like you just want to mess around with the tail, which there is nothing wrong with unless your non-Porsche owner friends find out.

You do have to remove the condenser to reach the fasteners to remove the tail. No way around that.
That's a Turbo/SC tea tray spoiler, upside down. The Carrera should have a whale tail. |

+1 you must loosen the condensor from the lid under the grill to access all fitments and if done properly by the dealer the 3 cross member strips to support at the lip held by sheet metal screws.
+1 Turbo Tail.

The upside down thing drives me nuts. I posted the picture from my I-pad and it looks fine when I the view the post on it. But, when I view the post on my android phone, the picture is upside down! BTW, thanks for your response.

That's part of the reason I'm thinking of removing it. It wasn't installed correctly. No supporting strips and no second gas shock to hold the lid open. But, in any event, I'm going to repaint the lid so it's a better match for the original paint on the rest of the car.

Removing the spoiler will reveal the mounting holes. Maybe better to source a replacement deck lid, then paint to match. That turbo deck spoiler not normally equipped on factory Carreras, yes?

Have a Carrera decklid and Carrera tail for sale in the classifieds if you want to return it to stock.

You could just replace the turbo rubber lip with a whale tail lip, if you wanted the proper Carrera tail.

Which Tail?
"The Carrera should have a whale tail. "
The Whaletail was produced from 1975 -77 and is not correct for a 1986 Carrera. The 1986 Carrera should have a "Carrera Tail" which is different. Rahl |

Well, if you want to do it properly, find a used turbo arm and have it painted when you do the tail or cut out the triangular mounting piece from an 8 gauge sheet metal, weld the mounting bracket on to the existing arm to even out the pressure of the lid when closed. It is nearly impossible to align the lid with a functioning dual strut on d-side alone. It was simply not designed to use two on one side.

Thanks for all the good info everyone! There a few small bodywork issues on my car and I was hoping to repaint the engine lid to better match the original GP white, so I thought I'd pull the spoiler off myself beforehand. Who knows, I might like the look! Besides, if I keep it, I need to fab up the anchor on the right hinge for the 2nd strut. Thanks, and I'll shoot a picture or two later.
