Anyone in Boston got an extra fan pulley shim??

Went to change my fan belt last night and found I only have 5 shims.

Planned trip to NY Saturday, $2.50 part will cost $25 to ship from pelican.

If anyone local to Boston, preferably North has on I can scab that would be awesome.

I live Ipswich, work in Boston.

I even tried my shop that does VWS and 356, shims totally different.

I do have all shims on outside, maybe I could do a standard thickness washer and remove the appropriate thin shims?

Thanks
Gary

It's also worth an ask to anyone in your area that has an engine apart to give you one of their camshaft sprocket shims. The cam shims are basically the same dimension as a fan pulley shim.

Any Dealer should have it in a day or two and they do not charge freight.

I don't have any extra but you can order these from McMaster Carr.

McMaster-Carr

You can also call Tim at KMC in Lawrence, MA. He probably has some.

What's wrong with your local dealer?

Regardless, you're fine.
Only the ones on the inside do anything.

Sugar wood, my understanding is you need all the shims so the pull your nut doesn't bottom out?

Maybe I'm over thinking this, since it has been like this for a few years??

Didn't even think about the local porsche dealer.

I'll check Granger and Fastenal, they are local.

Thanks all.

You won't bottom out. The tolerance on this shaft is not anywhere that precise.
There is tons of thread, see for yourself.

Dealer is your best bet.

Here in Arlington with one to spare.

I'll email you my number. I'm home tomorrow and Thursday.

Also Autobahn Performance in Peabody has a whole box of them if that is easier. Ask for Michael in parts.

I'd be careful about not having enough shims.

If the cup washer and nut bottom before the pulley half is pressed tight against the part fixed to the fan, the action of the pulley will work the half back and forth. This back and forth will abrade the squared off sides which key the half to the fan. This will eventually cut a groove into the fan part and allow the pulley half to move even more. Eventually it will no longer be held by the flats because there will be a round groove. When that happens the pulley won't work very well, because one half will be loose and can rotate independently of the fan. And you will need a replacement fan, or to weld it up and machine that part flat again.

This may not need the precision of setting a pinion or ring gear, or the cam parallelism, but there is a reason for it to be right.

On the other hand, I suppose running without the total shim stack for a while until you get another shim won't hurt.

It won't bottom before it's tight.
