73 or older. See welded up battery box and no allowance for impact bumper shocks in final picture of post #13 drivers side.

No, that corner has been added to the tub. The other side is likely more original.

Check the original boot plate under here, to see if there is the factory hole for the brake booster:

The rear inside quarter panels have the location holes for an oil tank like a 1972. But it's on both sides. Here is a pic of a 72 inner quarter panel. Very interesting

That same inner right quarter panel was used for years.

This looks like an opening for a through the body sway bar found on pre-74 cars, but not sure when the change came.

The change came in 1974 but lots of cars have been modified to take the earlier bars.

'71 and earlier had different impressions.

If you are referring to the features outlined in yellow here, that same quarter panel pressing was used for years and doesn't really help identify the car:

Sorry for the lighting but this is a 74 911. After 74 this area of the rain gutter was slanted back like yours. It's doubtful somebody modified this area.

My first thought was that it might have been a '75 or '76, but they have cut away so many details that would help identify it, I'm not sure I could help you without inspecting it in person. It does have some parts of an earleir car welded into the tub.

It may have been halfway well prepared early in it's life but whoever has worked on it since needs to be taken outside the back of the workshop and shot in the head, so they can't keep doing that to other cars.

Personally, I'd throw that whole tub away.

THANKS! Could you be a little more specific....why is your "gut feeling" that it is a 75 or 76?

SplitPersonlity 10-10-2016 05:08 AM

Thanks for all your help so far!
It would be nice to start narrowing down the gap on the year of this shell.... any inputs appreciated!

It has impact-bumpers AND "slanted" rain gutters - so it must be 1975 or newer. This seems certain.

What is the newest it could be...for sure...based on the sheel alone?

The oil temperature/pressure gauge would indicate it is a 1975, if the gauge is original to the car. If I have a photo from its early days that better showed the windshield wiper arms and driver's door mirror, It would help.

Have a look at my post number 23 and answer the question I asked there and get back to me.

It looks like a non-galv. tub. full galv. started in 1976

Very interesting - I will go through it to check galvanized or not. If you are correct - that pretty much nails it to 1975 then.

Great! Thanks!

javadog 10-10-2016 07:01 AM

That's not going to tell you much. Porsche started galvanizing parts of the tub in 1971 and increased the percentage over time. Given the rough life that car lived and the number of times it was painted, it's going to be difficult to discern anything about the galavanizing.

Do you have the original engine case? If so, post the engine serial number and type numbers.

I found galvanizing on the rear subframe of my 73
