911ST update 10/24

I have not done a very good job of posting pictures of the project as it progresses and have only stuck a random picture in other threads but I wanted to share some pics as it is starting to finally come together.

Started out as a 1970 911T, ahem...sportomatic.

Stripped and sandblasted....

after welding on factory "unobtainium" steel 911ST flares and bumpers...

Starting to smooth the body out and apply primer

Finally picked a color that I like and started painting. Skipping to this point makes it seem like it was a cake walk. Well, it wasn't. Body work is a real PITA!!! The whole project has been a lot of work and will still be a lot of work but at least I can see some light at the end of the tunnel. Beautiful day today in Seattle so I thought I would push it outside and take a few pics...

That is so cool. That color with those Fuchs is perfect. What's you ETA for getting it driveable? (glass, etc.). What color is that?

Among all the little fabrication bits on this car, I am most proud of this one... a steel ST/RSR replica fuel tank with a through the hood 917 filler cap... It started out as the stock tank for the 911T that went through a little weight reduction program and then hooked up with a really nice old VW tank. Ended up being a match made in heaven. The pieces were welded together, baffles installed and seam welded. Take a look, it can only be described in pictures.

I still need to get the tank sealed and do the final body and paint work to make it look all smooth. Oh and I can't forget the aero fin for the 917 cap!!!

Enough for now. I will post update pics to this link as they become available. Thanks for looking.

Nice color choice, the car looks beautiful. Looks like your work was well worth it, can't wait to see it complete. What motor are you going to use?

Nice tank as well.

Beautiful color! I can't wait to see it all come together. What's going on engine-wise?

Geese, thanks for all the positive input...

I'll try to answer a couple of questions. The wheels are 8, 9 x 15 with 225/50/15 and 245/50/15. The finish very complicated. First you start out with a somewhat polished wheel and then you scuff the hell out of it with scotch brite...takes about 3 minutes per wheel. The seem to hold up fine. I might rub them down with a little vaseline or other oil just so they don't get water spots but we'll see. I just like it because it looks racey and it is easy to maintain, 30 sec wipedown with a scotch brite pad and they are good as new.

I am going to leave all the trim silver but I am scotch briting that as well...I don't want anything shiny on the entire car.

The motor... well I have struggled with this one. Do I do a 2.7 RS type motor or a 2.5, that would be really trick. I have a spare 3.2 that I had intended for another project but then I though I could carb that and have a great motor... but then with the price of gas and the fantastic driveability of the motronic motor, I think I will install it as is. I will definately back date the heat, do SSI's and a install Steve Wong chip etc. but I want to drive this car and have fun with it. I know it is a little sacreligeous to put the motronic in there but in the end it will make a big difference whether I want to drive a car due gas mileage and fuel stink from the carbs. Still the motronic motor in this light of a car should be a ton of fun!

The flares were kind of a barn yard type find. Nobody makes them and there are even real ST's that have been restored with fiberglass because real flares were not available. GT racing makes these exact flares though in fiberglass.

The color... well I put too much work into finding that to let the cat out of the bag. It is a production color although, definately not from Porsche...very far from it!

I will keep you posted as I progress but hopefully I will be road worthy around X-mas...fingers crossed!!! Wouldn't that be a great Christmas present to myself?!?!

Screw sacreligeous...put it in with the EFI. This is exactly what I want to do for many of the same reasons you mentioned. Not to mention the theoretical end of seasonal tuning. With the exaust and chip, a good 230+ hp motor in that car will kick some serious butt!
