85 eurospec 911 idle issue

New to the boards and new Porsche owner.

Running great overall but I'm trying to figure out an idle issue. Might be a vacuum leak but also noticed when I engage both widow motors the idle issue subsides. Maybe a voltage issue? Any recommendations on how to diagnose are much appreciated!

Here's a video:

Now that is just plain weird.
Probably like you, I was thinking you had some hunting idle problem associated with the relevant intake parts, but the door windows?

When you do this is the car warmed up? (sounds like it is)
Are the windows already in the closed position?
Is there any chance you could monitor the battery/system voltage with Volt-meter and let us know? before and during the window test.

Someone else may chime in, but I think the idle control valve is varying, but I can't think of a situation where loading the window motors (and thus the electrical system) would have an effect on the ICV ( and DME that powers and provides PWM grounding to the ICV).

Welcome and congratulations.

Hey Steely, thx for the reply.

Car is at operating temp
Windows are in closed position/
I'll check on voltage

I'll check the ICV.

My mechanic and previous owner of the car thinks it might be the read main seal that's leaking also. Maybe because it's not a sealed environment?

Welcome aboard!

+1, that is very strange. Please post voltage readings, at "hunt" and when you actuate the window.

Rear main seal vacuum leak? That would be a first, so do you have an oil leak coming down the back of the engine. If rear main seal is leaking that is where she would be pissing oil.

BTW, where are you located, maybe a local Pelican can take a look.

New to you car would benefit from all the grounding points in the car being cleaned. It would help you familiarize yourself with where they are and eliminate any issues associated with poor grounding. Sounds like an electrical issue and cleaning the grounds will help

I agree - it could 'fix' the issue and it's generally a good idea as well.

As an aside, I don't see how a leaky rear main seal would contribute to this.
If the thought was that it was providing a vacuum leak, I don't think hitting the window switch would affect it.

There are other threads you can look at here (search hunting idle), and they'll probably take you to problems associated with a vacuum leak or the ICV. But the window switch has me stumped.

Using the windows (putting an electrical load on the system) is an definite clue however. Could you try this technique with the headlights and some of the fans instead of the window?

I am suspecting a faulty VR but voltage readings will deduce that.

It seems that engaging both window motors add a significant load from the alternator to lower the idle, below the hunting threshold. Might try, as an experiment, lowering the idle speed slightly and see if that fixes the problem. I know my 87 Carrera is very sensitive to hunting if the idle air bypass screw is backed off too much.

Cheers,

Joe
