Valvoline 20W-50 4-Stroke Motorcycle Oil

My local auto parts is having a sale on this Valvoline oil.

Many of my local stores no longer carry the VR-1 20w 50 high zink oil so when I saw this it seemed interesting.

Is there any downside to a 'wet clutch' additive?

I have had very good success with VR-1 so at $3.89/ quart this Valvoline 20W-50 4 -Stroke motorcycle oil seems like a great value against $9.00/Qt for the Vr-1.

It is for a 2.0 air cooled S engine.

I believe that is for a wet clutch application and not suited for auto use.... a quick search should pull that info for you

The Mobil One VTwin 20W50 is made for the same motorcycle application and is highly recommended for use in our air cooled motors. It has the highest ZDDP level (1600)
and is used exclusively by many Porsche owners. Don't quite understand the "not suited for auto use" comment!

I called Valvoline and they said no. The motorcycle oil does not have as much zinc as the Vr-1 and the wet-clutch additive package is not 'recommended' for the 911...

So I'll spend the extra $30 and not worry about it.

Mobil One V Twin makes no mention of any "wet clutch" additive, so apperantly they don't use one. I do know their V Twin is highly recommened for air cooled engines. It is however very expensive!

Hi,
I don't have big technical knowledge but I have been using castrol or valvoline 20w50 4t motorcycle oil (not synthetic) on my 72 T and I'm really happy.
I gained about 10psi oil pressure when hot at idle and also have never adjusted valves since a long time.
Just want to share my experience. I'm going to keep using it.
Thanks.

Mobile 1 V Twin oil is marketed to the Harley crowd. While all modern Harleys have wet clutches, those clutches are not lubricated by the engine oil supply. The big twins have three separate oil supplies - one for the engine, one for the transmission, and one for the primary drive (containing the primary drive chain and the clutch). Sportsters have two oil supplies - one for the engine and one that is shared between the transmission and the primary drive. Mobile 1 V Twin is not meant to work in modern motorcycles that share one oil supply between the engine, transmission, and clutch - it does not contain the friction modifiers necessary for use with a wet clutch. The Valvoline Motorcycle oil does, which renders it unsuitable for our engines.
