You need to pick tools and counter clock wise spin the retaining ring off after removing the knob straight out.
Search for schematics or label each before disconnect all the wires. CAUTION, Disconnect the Battery.

Is the light switch on the 86 different?
I tried removing the knob pulling straight out, and also turning counterclockwise (while holding the shaft with a mini visegrip) and no dice. I don't want to break anything in the process... Edit: The Bentley has a great picture showing the 10mm nut at the end of the shaft Alas the old brittle plastic cover with the light logo broke into pieces...  I'll try to source one...

Headlight switch.
Disconnect the battery prior to removing switch.

 Battery disconnected, and old wiring removed with great difficulty as the PO added a stereo system with a lot of oversized wiring and looms. I should be able to have it back together by COB today.
