Exhaust hardware…..what to do?
Hi Guys,
I took my entire exhaust system (heat exchangers to muffler) off to sand blast, repaint, and reinstall. I know that I need to replace the gaskets with new ones, but should I do this with the nuts and bolts too? If so, do I source the nuts and bolts from the "Miscellaneous" section our Host provides? Also, I hear talk of copper nuts etc. What type of bolt and nut material is best? Any other tips for reinstallation such as anti-seize? Thanks! |

Torque only to spec, it will feel not enough but over torquing will warp the flanges and cause leaks, so be careful.
As a matter of fact, check the flanges on the the cross overs, cat if applicable and muffler, you want to insure they are completely flat for installation. You can use a piece of granite and 80 grit sand paper to flatten them out or send to a machine shop. If you are expecting to do future servicing, go with copper nuts but Host's nuts and barrel nuts are just fine.

Check this thread: Where to buy Si/Br nuts? (for exhaust)
An industrial supply house or a well stocked Hardware store (not Lowes) usually has items like this. For me it is an ACE Hardware, Fastenal, Industrial Fasteners, or Tacoma Screw. Failing that, there is always McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com).

You can also get hardware kits for the muffler and pre-muffler from M&k.

A good upgrade is replacement of the barrel nuts with flange nuts. Easier to work with - you can use 1/4" socket stuff on them. For sure use anti-seize with whatever you use. I like the copper appearing ones, though I don't think they have any critical advantage over ordinary steel, which is what the barrel nuts are,
