3.2 in 71 911

Need some advice. What are the drawbacks of putting a 3.2 Carrera engine in a 71 911T? Does the extra weight create any issues?

The 71 2.2 weighs about 400lbs and developed 125-180hp (TES) depending on model
the 3.2 weighs about 480 lbs and is 230hp or so (1.5 - 2x the HP/TQ)

More weight, but significantly more power........

I had a 3.2 in my 73T...combined with a 915 with 7:31 R&P, LSD ...a total blast.
Also it was flared a little, had 7&9s, 23/31 T-bars, front swaybar, etc....I never noticed the added weight.

It should make the car a blast to drive and the drivability of the Motronic engine is great.

The extra weight is an issue and I'd be concerned about a 901 transmission taking the additional torque without giving up eventually. However, if you take off gently from a standstill, it should hold together. Remember, Porsche changed from the sturdier 915 transmission to the G50 while using the 3.2 engines.

+1 motronic is great............I was warned that the 3.2, 7:31 combo was a possible accident waiting to happen, but it worked very well. Also....regarding engine cooling. I had Elephant Racing ribbed oil lines with Wide mouth cooler. Worked great...........

A minor issue is the 71 911 has 26mm Oil Hoses while the 3.2 motor has 30mm Oil Hoses. Also, the 71 oil tank has a threaded fitting on the supply to the motor while the 3.2 motor has a slip fitting (the "S" Hose).

Both these issues easily remedied with custom fittings and hose.

I wanted more performance in my 72 years ago so purchased a 2.7, then later wanted more. Mag cases are very expensive to gain more power. I had already removed 250 lbs of weight so I just wanted power with reliability. Went to to 3.0L aluminum case. Added twin plugs , 42mm custom webers and got 245 hp and 8.9:1 power to weight. This 3.0L was built to be bullet proof and has taken everything I've thrown at it.

Lots of people have successfully swaped 3,2s into a '71.

There are a number of details to attend to. Do a search, this used to be a popular swap.

The oil tank, as mentioned, needs to be replaced or have fittings adapted. The '71 tank will probably be OK for the street.

The transmission in a '71 has a weak first gear, again probably OK for street cruising.

The transmission case will have to have a cut made to allow the flywheel sensors on the 3,2 to work.

There will be wiring issues, matching the engine harness to the chassis needs work.

The '71 ignition CDI and tach wont' work. Make sure you get the entire ignition and all the Motronic controls from the 3,2.

What exhaust will you use.

Good luck.

Buddan- Wondering how you are coming with your engine swap.

I can help with both Oil & Fuel Hoses.

With a 3.2 you probably wouldn't need to use first gear.

I went the option of fitting an MSD (re-curved distributor) and Webers on my 3.2 and consequently don't believe there's a huge weight difference. Bullet proof engine upgrade and it looks like the original 2.0.

Cheers

Do you think you could get away with a stock baffled oil tank without having any aux oil cooler up front or in fender? 70T probably street use.

For a 70 T motor, yes.

Funny Gordon. Really I'm wondering with a 3.2 is it necessary to have a cooler up front somewhere or can I use the stock cooler with baffles added.
