Question Goofy question about my '91 C2 rear spoiler

Does the rising spoiler do anything benifical besides creating downforce at speed?

Does it help with cooling while up?

Personally I hate the look of the car with the spoiler up
(not that I see my own car being driven by someone else very much...)

If it had no "real" effect accept for downforce, I'd like to deactive it.

I'll trade you mine for yours. It's just the stock SC deck lid and should fit your C2 w/ no mods.

Yes, it helps with cooling -- acting as a big scoop, at speed.

I don't think it creates downforce; it just reduces lift.

I thought you had to mod the hinges to use a C2 tail on an earlier 911.

Jack, Tyson? I don't know about the hinges. What would be modified?

Yes, the hinges need to be bent, welded, or otherwise tweaked. They are spaced 1 inch further apart on the 964 lid, to make room for the retractable spoiler.

How did you guys mount the hinges to the body? I've got my hinges bent and welded, but now I'm stuck. Unless I've got the wrong hinges, it looks to me like the bolts that held the original hinges won't work, and the holes on the body are slotted. Did you have to get special bolts made, or do you have to replace the bushings on the body? I've been racking my brains on this for a while.

My car is in winter storage right now, so I don't have any pics. I wish I did, it would make it easier to explain. If you look at widebody911's webpage, you can see how he bent and welded the hinges to make them fit the bolt pattern on the 964 lid; that part's easy. The problem I see is that the top of the 964 hinge (where it bolts to the bracket on the body) has a smaller diameter hole and is quite a bit wider.

Also, the original hinges attach with a special bolt that fits into the slotted hole on the body bracket. If I attach the 964 hinges with a standard 6mm (or 8, I can't remember which one fits) bolt, the bolt will be able to move up & down in the slot. Does this make any sense?

yes, but the bolt is supposed to move in the slot that's how you get your body alignment right?? or am I thinking of the wrong slot.

I've got a '67 body, so it's even more difficult for me to envision.

I thought widebody used his existing hinges, then adapted them to the decklid...

off to double check his page.

Yeah, wrong slot. There's a slotted bushing on the body bracket. The bolt (or pin) fits into the slot so it won't turn. The hinge rotates on that bolt (pin). I need to find some pictures!

1. why can't you just drill the hole larger? on the C2 bracket? The you can just use your '76 bolt to hold it on...no?

ahhh ...wider...there will be an answer...I wish I had one to go look at...

disregard my previous statement.
