Post Reason to change hub? (pic)

Mech teared down front right wheel (in order to change bearings) and found out that somebody (previous owner?) did some sort of reparation and welding on hub, probably due to previous bearing failure. He said that hub must be perfectly smooth in order to accept new bearings and that i shouldn't drive out of shop without new one (to the tune of 450$/hub for used one)...which i accepted.

Here's the pic of hub and it makes sense to me to change it. And it's factory dealership...so they don't want any shoddy work being done.

What do you think?

Cheers!

Agreed- hubs are a "safety" item. Failure of the hub or bearings at speed could lead to catastrophic consequences. I would have done the same.

doesn't look good. they go for about $150 to $250 used around here. 1-1.5 hours labor to swap.

That isn't a hub, it's the axle attached to the strut ... and I don't see any evidence of welding on the axle, just discoloration from an overheated bearing. A closer pic of the axle with less dust shield would help a lot!

Discoloration of the axle from a siezed/overheated bearing is pretty common, and it doesn't get the axle anywhere near hot enough to weaken it! That axle is bigger/stronger than most US 1/2-ton pickup trucks of the past 50 years, and the loading on the front end of a 911/930 under any condition, even 200+ mph in a CTR at Nurburgring ... doesn't present any danger of failure of that axle! Granted, a bunged-up axle like that does present problems in installing new bearings!

Unless you have more convincing evidence than that pic, you were HAD, and CONNED by the mechanic!

Just as John Walker told you two days ago ... a used strut would have been fine!

Yepp, it's a axle on my 930.

OK, i believe they teared down the axle and found out that it previously suffered from overheated bearing. Whoever changed bearing that time used file to smooth out the axle so he could get bearings on.

I agree, it might not be big thing but that wheel sounded pretty weird, so it might be the outer bearing that wasn't sitting perfectly parallel to inner bearing...which induced bearing failure in this case. Pads were unevenly worn too.

Here's another pic of axle:

A brand new strut assembly for a 930 costs around $425 from Pelican parts, even less if its the '89 model. ($333)

So the price quoted for a used part is not right.

I picked up a used strut/spindle (which is what you need, why does everyone keep calling it a hub???) from Parts Heaven for $60 USD. 50 bucks alignment, 2 hours labor...that's under 500 for repair of a not-uncommon part. You need a second opinion. Sounds like your "used part" that the dealer found is being marked up about 6 or 7 times.

Hello

Turbos have the Bilstein struts and they are not cheap even used they got there price.

Now the ring for the seal lip is separate and can be renewed.

I would have changed it too.

Roland
