911 2.7 to 3.0 - is it possible?

Hello,

i bought a 911 sc last year and they told me it has a 3.0 engine but looking in the case, it is a 2.7 magnesium one. Asked to the buyer he told me that it has a magnesium case from a 2.7 but the rest is from a 3.0 SC, that he personally installed it.

Is it possible? or just i bougt a SC with a 2.7 engine due to my ignorance? I attach some pictures in case it helps.

Itīs a well known porsche specialist here in Spain but i find the car with a lack of punch.

Thanks !

The engine number is just to the right base of the fan. That's a good place to start.

I could be wrong, but I think the SC which started in 1978 moved from their 2.7 to the 3.0. Can you confirm the year of your car?

Does the previous owner have receipts for the engine work?

Your car does not seem to be one of their featured restorations, why not contact them for a clarification?

UrpiSport-Porsche Repair

As far as I know the original 2.0 liter six cylinder engine maxed out on displacement with the 2.8L twin spark plug racing track engine.

No, for one thing the head stud spacing for 2.7 is 83mm for the 3.0's it is 86mm

That does look like a 2.7 distributor, so my guess is you have a 2.7. As suggested, look for the engine type and serial numbers and we'll tell you what it was originally.

Might want to post the VIN too, maybe the car isn't an SC?

Post additional part numbers........

Gallego,

Aside from the VIN, post the part numbers for the following:
WUR
FD
AAR
Ignition distributor
CDI

The ignition distributor of SC's rotate CCW, has rotor and no points. This is the easy way to identify your motor. Keep us posted.

Thanks for the messages.

The engine crankcase it's for sure a 2.7. You can see it's made of magnesium and the number is 6140059......what it means a 1974 2.7 engine (911/92 type)

The car it's for sure a 911 1982 Sc according to the VIN number and details.

So, in one moment the made a swap of the engine due to unknown reason.
But my question was if it could be possible to have a 2.7 crankcase with the rest (cylinder, pistons.....) of a 3.0. That was the dealer told me but now I think it is imposible as Bill mentions: the stud spacing is different.

Do you think am I right ?

Any way, I will take the pictures boyt911sc mentions.

I have here the serial number of one of the intake pipe (911 110 169 0R)

CIS components........

Gallego,

So far, all the CIS components you have shown are not for an SC engine. Please remove the ignition distributor cap and examine it. SC has rotor and no point. Crank the crankshaft CW and observe the direction of the distributor rotation. This will confirm which engine you have. Do you have a 6-pin or 3-pin CDI? Keep us posted.

What's up with the fan strap decal that lists either a 2.7l or 3.0l?

That could have been on a 2.7 or 3.0, My '73 C3 originally had the same decal

I see evidence of a possible Carrera 3.0 orat least mid to late 70's parts

item- the shields on the wiring were oe on '76 C3,don't think that SC's had them but I may be wrong there

The distributor on an C3 was the same as on the 2.7s points and clock wise rotation so that isn't a conclusive test.

The red shroud is correct for a 2.7S , or 2.7/ 3.0 Carrera

the crank on a C3 was the same as on the 2.7s but the head studs spacing would prohibit 3.0 heads on a 2.7 mg or al. cc.

the studs would also prohibit the 3.0 p/cs to be used on a 2.7 cc

Just remembered from another thread there are/were special Mahle p/c sets w/ 95mm bore for CIS that could be used on a 2.7 mg car for 3liter displacment, expensive though

If OP has the 3.0 p/c setup from Mahle, how does he verify without disassembling the engine?

It's not an SC engine, nor a C3 engine. It's a ROW 2.7 and has at least some components off of a later ROW 2.7, like the fuel distributor.

It may be modified internally, as we can't tell much about that from the outside, but I don't think it's anything special. That's probably why you don't feel it has much power; it probably doesn't.

Ok. Thanks.

Assuming it's a 2.7 engine, how can I know which gearbox am I wearing?

I want to replace the engine for a sc engine. First, I want to check what 915 I'm wearing. how can I know it?

Second, in case is an older 915 than the 915/62, the one that came with sc 81 engine, do I need to change it also ?
Rgds
