JP,

Why the K27-7200. Good question and it took me forever to reach my answer.

1) Lots of folks like the Garret turbo. But it was never clear which Garret they liked.

2) The Garret supposedly uses ball bearings and is designed for a liquid cooled application. It was redesigned for our air cooled motors... but the heat factors make the Garret longevity questionable. The K-series is designed for our cars.

3) Popularity. I know Porsche builds the Cayenne now, but back when they build real cars they used the K27 as the last of the single turbos.

4) Cost. Garret=$2500. K27=$850.

5) Stephen at Imagine Auto (sorry Wayne). I spoke at length with Stephen about my driving style. I am just not a flat-out high speed junkie. Can't afford to total myself with a family to support. And I am just not that good with the car (yet?).

But I love the acceleration, even if I stop accelerating around 120 mph. The K27-7200 comes on strong at lower rpms. It is reputed to lose effectiveness above 5,000 rpm. But what does that mean - does the boost disappear? Apparently losing effectiveness means going from 1.0 Bar to 0.9 Bar. So the K27 can't push 1.0 Bar above 5,000 revs... am I going to miss that?

So those were my reasons JP. By the way, almost everyone likes the Kokeln (especially if you have the A/C still installed). Haven't felt any qualms yet.

Ooops, sorry about the 5spd comment, didn't see the year ('89).
915 gears are probably lower that G50.

The K27-7200 will most certainly run strong past 5000rpm. I can blast from 0-140mph in ~14 seconds. That is ~6000rpm in 5th gear, it keeps pulling to 7000rpm easy. I'm sure gearing and exhaust help contribute to make the entire package work.

Thanks! It looks like it'll be a K27-7200 for me too; the Kokeln is nearly double the price (I can get a K27 and an EBC for what the Kokeln would cost). To the guys looking for 850hp out of the motor, the difference is probably material; to me, well, I'm not too worried about top end, but more about boost earlier.

Good luck and enjoy the living ****e out of it.

Best,

JP
