Boost addiction

I'm sure this is old news to some of you 930 owners. In fact, some of you are probably bored by this combination.

But I picked up the car today with the new K27 7200 turbo and the Kokeln Intercooler. Combined with the already installed GHL header and GHL dual outlet muffler, and a 1.0 Bar spring... well...

WHAT TOOK ME SO LONG TO DO THIS?

The car just rocks! Boost starts around 2,300 rpm or so. And from there it just keeps going. And the power delivery is so smooth - hit the red line while accelerating today. Just so quick to rev up.

And the sound. Going through an underpass and it sounded like a screaming tidal wave echoing back. When you accelerate it sounds like a jet engine has just hit afterburner. Oh me. Oh my.

Sorry about this post. But I had to tell someone (anyone) out there who would understand what an adrenaline rush this is. And Charles (Cellison)... if you liked Blkbird before, you gonna love her now!

Thanks for listening...

Nice post. I have not done all those upgrades yet myself. I am going to build the headers this winter if I have time. I can't wait.

Do you get flames out the exhaust?

Even though I don't have a "930" turbo as such, I totally understand your addiction and excitement Blkbird.

There truely is nothing like a 911 on boost!!!

Seems like you have done all the right mods to your machine. Well done

Enjoy!

BlkBird, you are SO right. I am a total boostaholic. I just love the power you can make with these cars. (mine currently puts down 334 and 381 to the wheels) There is nothing like taking a friend along for a ride in the car and watching them go from mildly impressed to blown away in about 6 seconds. By the time I get to the top of third and 130 or so they are crying uncle.

I recently took a friend with a Boxster S for a ride and he just about peed his pants. He asked me if I wanted to trade on the spot. (AS IF!)

The only problem with the addiction is that you quickly get used to the power and are always left wanting more. Good thing I am into DEs and am able to scare myself plenty with a weekend at the track.

I have a few plans for my car this year and hope to take it up another level once I figure out the right upgrade path.

Congrats on the upgrades. I know JUST how you feel. (have you put it on a dyno yet?) If not, I would recommend putting it on the dyno so you can begin to measure the effectiveness of your next upgrades. (and yes, there will be more upgrades to come, trust me.)

Blown - I am not sure about the flames. To be honest I am usually hanging on for dear life. Do you see the flames when you are hard on the boost, or when you release the throttle suddenly after being on boost?

Texas - The next formula upgrade is SC grind cams. But the guys who work on the car tell me to drive it a while. They feel Blkbird is pretty darn quick as it is and I may not want more HP.

Yeah. Sure.

I drove my car tonight for the first time in about 10 days (I've been very busy). Warmed her up, then opened her up. You forget how loud and strong the engine is under full boost... and I put my .8 bar spring back in (pre-detonation problems on our 91 octane fuel out here). Someday, when I get a large intercooler, the boost will go back up...

Flames can be had easily by plugging two small hoses going to deccel-valve. (Big shiny thing under intercooler)

The SC cams will add a bit of driveability/torque.
If you REALLY want a kick get a 5spd tranny. Things happen sooooo fast with the low gears of a 915.

Mine:
Euro exhaust
K27-7200
0.7 bar (formerly 1.0 bar)
B&B Intercooler
SC cams
Euro distributor
Euro fuel system (if there is a difference)
Sachs Clutch

She is an '89. So she came with the five speed. Actually I have never driven a four so I couldn't tell you the difference.

5th is only used when crusing down the highway in distance driving mode. But I am told the gear spread is better in 2nd to 4th because of this extra gear. 1st is about useless. Gets the car rolling.

Although the manual does say to rev the motor to 5,000 rpm in 1st gear at least once per drive. Clear out the moisture?

Sounds FUN!

How is around-town drivablity impacted? The mods you've done are VERY similar to what I'm planning for my treasure. I tend to drive it to work a couple of times a week (can't stay out of the driver's seat and I run down PCH to Santa Monica) so need civility. Is it better or worse?

Todd,

Definitely the way to go. As you would expect she still drives the same off-boost. But that resevoir of instant acceleration is now available almost all the time.

I found that the GHL header and muffler brought the effective boost down to 2,300 rpm. But the rocket kicked in around 3,200 rpm.

Now that rocket is poised and waiting around the same time as the boost starts up. And I usually keep the revs around 3,000 rpm when driving around town, so that puts me well within the boost "zone".

One thing though. I notice the boost gauge shows I am running with boost more often. But that must be the new K27 or the Intercooler. Certainly not me pressing down on the gas harder or more often.

The "older" Pelicanheads are right. This is definitely the way to go.

BlkBird,
Sound like your ready to join the "HP junkies".
Your right about the rush from a hot 930 on
boost. There's nothing like leaving your friends
twitches like lab rats after a ride!
You have a lot more fun coming, tons of cool mod's
out there. Horsepower is like money, you can't get
too much. Welcom to the "Dark Side".

Yes, I have told Bob Sanderson @ Performance Imports (the local shop) that he is like a Heroin dealer.

Sure, the first hit is free. After that... it gets expensive.

Congrats on the upgrades. They really wake up the car and is a must for any 930 turbo.

Be careful with the boost spring though. when you change turbo, i/c, headers and muffler you free up the system so boost rises even with a standard boost spring. When I did the same stuff as you (except I used a k29), a mechanical boost gauge showed I was actually boosting 1.25 bar. I swapped to a standard spring and it showed just over 1.0 bar. I broke my piston rings because of this.

You might be ok if you install the Andial fuel enrichment but why not go back to the standard boost spring. You will lose 20-30hp but gain a whole lot of engine life.

Cool

Great fun to read about your upgrade and all the replies to your post. Lots of speed loving people out there.

That's exactly what the K27 does; give you boost at lower revs. This way you don't have to wait for 3000-3200 to enjoy the fun. Other versions of the K27 give you more top end power.

Does anyone have experience with the Kokeln turbo? I am thinking about the Lindsey Racing Turbo Kit that comes with Kokeln turbo, Intercooler, Muffler and 1 bar spring. They clame its way more modern than the K27 turbo?

Anyone know?

Blkbird -
Very sweet. Why the K27 7200? I'm looking at a turbocharger upgrade this spring, so I'm curious why not any of the other turbo offerings out there?

Any advice from youse 930 guyse would be appreciated.
The current set-up includes:
Electromotive TEC-1 / crankfire
964 cams
Twin plug
Kokeln intercooler
.8 bar (will uprate that later, when EBC decision is made)
Stainless exhaust (not sure what make -- p.o. installed. p.o. was a wild-ass gear head, so it's probably pretty good)
Euro headers
Yellow paint -- it does make the car faster, actually.

Any insight/observations would be welcomed.

JP
