930 engine swap impressions, and oil cooler advice please

Well I was starting to think I'd never say this, but I drove my '75 911S with its 930 3.0 engine today. I mean really drove it, not just around the block, but 25 miles around all the farm roads.

I was trying to be gentle to seat the rings, but you know how hard it can be I couldn't resist opening it up a couple times, but I did try to keep it under 4500rpm or so.

First impressions: Yeeeeeeeee-HAWWWWW it's fast! D$%# fast. My friend was following me in his stock '83 SC and said he had his foot on the floor and his engine at redline, and was quickly getting smaller in my mirrors. This with me shifting at 4.5K. Even at lower rpm levels, it feels much quicker than my '88 Carrera.

Other not-so-nice impressions:
--It's going to need some serious suspension work and wider rear tires, which I knew going in. But it really needs this stuff. The weight in the back is so apparent, even in slow tight turns. If you guys have got torsion bar recommendations, I'm all ears.

--It's leaking oil, from the valve cover/cam tower area. I hope it's just rocker shafts or valuve cover gaskets, but I've already tightened and replaced these things. I'm praying it's not the towers leaking (it's freshly rebuilt, my first engine rebuild).

--Finally, to get to the point of this message, It's got the trombone cooler up front, and oil temp was peaking at ~240 on an 85 degree day, which is when I pulled over and shut it off for a bit.

I wanted to be sure the engine was going to run before investing in a cooler, so now I need to get one. For this particular car, what should I get? Would an Elephant widemouth cooler be adequate? I'm thinking about ducting any fender mounted cooler I put in there, but still, this thing needs a lot of cooling. Any opinions?

Sleeper! Don't flare it out or anything, for me please! Just pull up to every unsuspecting chump and blow him/her right off the street. I'll start up a fund for rear tires so you can knock 'em down sideways!

I LOVE IT!

Colin,

That is an awesome creation. I loved the write up and I'm keen to hear what it's like when you get it upto 6,500rpm! As far as the cooler goes, the Elephant Racing Widemouth cooler did the trick for my '76, which seemed to run pretty hot. Check out this recent thread on Comair Rotron fans. I run one and am very satisfied. Just plumb it in and install the factory stone sheild/fairing.

Intercooler and less restrictive rear wing is adviced. ROW front oil-cooler (one with lot's of copper tubes) too.

930s came stock with a trombone cooler. A freind of mine tracks his regularly with a modded motor and has no heat issues.
My 930 transplant runs hot on the gage (a falsely high reading) - because the sender is stock 930 and the gage is stock SC.

I was present at the 2.7 engine drop on this car and know that Colin has put in a lot of time and effort into this project. The 930 engine looked very impressive on the stand and even better in the car. Actually witnessed him driving it yesterday but only leaving a parking lot. I guess I will have to line up for a ride one of these days.

Great job.

Colin, Since I live in the Sacramento Valley too, I know how hot it gets here. I would start with the Elephant Racing widemouth cooler. This alone will be a huge difference over your trombone loop. If your lines are damaged, I would put on Chuck's oil lines as well. These two combined with an electric fan, would be a great set-up.

I would also suggest that you duct some air to it as well. Either home fabricated, or one of the cooler scoops Pelican sells.

I thought you would want some high RPM's to seat the rings. I thought babying them kept them from seating.

RarlyL8, it sounds like you're running the trombone with your transplant also? I took care to get a new temp sender that matches the '75 gauge, so I'm confident that I really am getting to 240. Maybe our two climates are different enough to be OK for one and not the other car (?).

Chris, I've read with interest all the MotoMan breakin discussions, and about your track breakin. I have bought in to the "drive it hard" argument and am doing the load-up and coast-down thing to break in the rings and put compression on the engine. Even so, there's something about revving the bejeezuz out of a new engine that scares me. I'm trying to find a happy medium. Maybe after a few more miles I'll redline it.

Hey Bill, I was so excited about driving the thing yesterday, I didn't even offer you a ride. Sorry, and stop by any time and you can drive it.

Colin, Congrats on driving it. I am still running the trombone loop in my car. But it is freezing here. When it gets hot out my car runs a little hot. So I would get a Mocal or eqiv cooler. I haven't looked at the widemouth one yet.
Have a blast

big crank pulley, small fan pulley, drives the fan faster. get the largest crank pulley available, like on a 78 SC. 130mm i think. good for as much as 20° in some cases. that front end looks pretty high. drop it on down for better handling. congrats on finishing the job!

Hehe John, as soon as I posted those pictures, I realized how high that front end is. Was going to drop it tonight, but I went for a drive in the cool air instead. It's just too fun. So light, and revs so quickly. Maybe I'll lower it tomorrow. Or the next day....

I'll look into that pulley idea. Sounds like a worthwhile upgrade.

Adam, thanks for that fan link. That looks like a good idea too.

I'm running the multi-tube type fender cooler on my transplant. I doubt that the climate is significantly warmer where you are in the summer. It may just be an issue of limited cool air to the engine due to the lack of a rear wing. I'm running a GT-2 wing and an oversized intercooler so the available air for cooling is optomized.
Driving habbits also contribute to heat. I stay on boost for very short spurts. The temp spikes during these runs but cools back down to 180 shortly after.

It is. Where it might be 90-95 F. & 50-90% relative humidity, east of the rockies on a hot Summer day, it's 105-115 F. & 20% or less RH here in what they call the Sacramento Valley, on a hot day.

I know this is an old thread, but would you have some advice on wiring up my 930 engine so it's best setup in my 1972 widebody
