Red face Alot of smoke & oil (could have been worse)

Mike (mikez), Ingo (ischmitz), and myself decided to head over the hill to a local watering hole for an adult beverage. We let Mike lead the way, not that we had a choice ( his 3.6 is ffaaassstttt ), Ingo was next and then myself bring up the rear. On the way back into town Ingo was feeling brave and thought he might try and keep up with Mike’s 3.6. Me being smart once again watched from behind. At the top of the pass (154) I see a lot of white smoke coming from the rear of Ingo’s 74. Ingo had just rebuilt his tranny and put everything back together, slapped the engine back in the car no more then 24 hours prior. Here is a couple of pix of the aftermath.

Is that oil?

This doesnt look good

Mike & Ingo check things out

Ingo's chariot arrives

Mike being helpful as usual

Back at Ingo's the problem is found

A better view

Seems as though the new oil line and tire were a wee bit to close. Ingo should be back on the road in no time.

Hm, that's why he flipped me off when he passed us.......

Anyway, the tranny worked like a charm. Shifting was nice and smooth through all gears. After rebuilding that one a new oil line seems like nothing to worry about. And I will put it in right this time.

Always used to wonder about those 3 inch red lights that mount in place of the clock in track cars. The oiling system in a 911 is pretty efficient at dumping its load if an external line fails, right?

Goo that you caught it quickly - no damage, and a simple fix. Nice rides.

Oil warning lights

I have one of those big red warning lights in my race car - fitted after an bearing seized on the way to the track due to oil pump drive shaft failing (I had shorted the oil gauge out fitting a shift light the night before...)

I know a guy who has lost 2 engines due to oil line failures in tarmac rallies - lots going on, didn't notice vol guage drop and the oil pumps out REALLY fast (one during the London to Sydney marathon - engine blew a few 100 k's from the finish line - six weeks effort gone)

They are cheap insurance IMO.

Cheers - Ryan

As I said, nothing that can't be fixed. 15$ spent at a local hydraulic shop, 2 quarts of oil and a can of engine gunk and I am back in business.

Man, I expected the worst. Blown motor or engine fire. Started to ask myself where I xxxxup in the process of putting the engine back in.

What a relieve when I jacked the car up and found the hole in the oil line.

Being a motorcycle rider myself, it can kill you if you ride in someone else's oil spill. No fun. Please share the road. Motorcycle riders drive Porsche too.

Yelcab, belive me it was the least of my intentions to spill oil in the first place much less getting the motorcycle rider involved. I rode motorcycles for 12 years and my one and only accident was to side my bike on an oil trail. Couldn't even get the feet of the pedal cluster before I hit the ground. So I know exactly what you are talking about. Peace

I enjoyed this post. ischmitz seems to have taken this in humor considering this could have been a potential pain in the ass. Like everyone else, I am glad that it was only a ruptured hose, and not something more hazardous. Take care! Chris

Should be rust free in that rear quarter for a couple of decades.

I had a similar spill from a busted connection to the oil thermalstat once. The scary thing is the traction on that tire is totally gone, so if you had not caught it and stopped, you may have ended up in the ditch. Gave new meaning to trailing throttle oversteer.

Peace.
