New to this forum, suddenly new to 911, coming from an odd direction

It's invigorating to start fresh in a new subject. I have a lot to learn. I've been dabbling in cars recently, without a plan - I am an opportunist.

I started in the Porsche world with an '09 Cayman S PDK four years ago. I think this car represents well "the celebration of engineering", a phrase used to defend PDK. It also represented an existential threat to my drivers license.

I became interested in a vintage 911, decided upon an '87-89, but was late to that party. I had fond recollections of the 928 introduction in the 1970's, so I found myself in a nice 1987 S4. The practice among serious 928 owners is to learn how to work on them, and then do a lot of work on them, mostly preventative. The "intake refresh" routine involves installing $1000 of new hoses, sensors, seals and other doodads - a winter-long project for me.

A '59 Bugeye Sprite appeared for sale locally. It became a respite from 928 complexities. I've had the engine out twice already - no big deal.

This spring, I ordered a shiny new Macan, and decided to sell the Cayman. But a friend suggested an exchange. A fair cash adjustment was settled upon, and his 1982 SC Euro is now mine as of last week. My friend will be celebrating engineering, while I'll be learning not to lift.

A sticky heater flap/valve thing on one side needs fixing. The D-shaped spring on the clutch lever interferes with a heat exchanger - possibly a missing spacer, but perhaps I'll need a hammer. Otherwise it's good for now.

If the whale tail is original, I guess I'll keep it. Otherwise, I'd just soon put a plain lid on it. Thoughts? Oh - I've not figured out where to get a CoA for a euro - not PCNA, apparently - so that's a related question.

I'm looking forward to improving this car, between upcoming campaigns on the 928 project.

Welcome. Nice car. Tail is a Turbo tail aka "tea tray" so not original to your SC. Fairly common to see it added on later.

If it has a front spoiler or the holes to mount 1 it probably came with it.

Blew the pic up, I saw the front spoiler.

Do the rubber lips interchange?

Yes it was an option in Europe for the SC.

Welcome to the forum!

I'd like to hear more about your impressions of the Cayman with PDK and the Macan. (Wife "needs" (wants) something smaller than her existing station wagon - and is jealous of the old 911, but won't drive it. I figure a Cayman may be a nice "compromise"...).

Nice introduction. Nice 911. I have an 81 with a Carrera tail. My kid was right beside me when I was checking out your pic. "Is that your car, Dad?" Ha.

That Omega spring is really odd to install. It's like a puzzle and I do remember that you bump up against the heat exchanger in the early part of trying to figure out the puzzle. However, I don't know if it can be installed incorrectly and work, but with a rub on the exchanger. Others will know.

I just saw a well tended early 80's black 928 today. The weather is changing.

Welcome and congrats - you'll love it.
I like and would keep the tail, but plain lids are of decently low cost if you wanted one as a backup/primary.

Ok, I'm getting some good information already, and encouragement - thanks. I'll check for codes tomorrow.

Those in my neighborhood and interested in the 928 can attend my gathering in June - Camp928.com.

The Macan won't be delivered until late June. My Cayman was a perfect car, and PDK is just as magical as you hear. Anyone torn between a Cayenne and a Macan need only understand that one has an evil torque convertor, and the other does not.

It makes my head spin a little, this trade of a perfect modern car (plus cash!) for an old quirky/iconic 911. The bottom line is that I never fell in love with the Cayman - I preferred driving the 928; I have a lot of skin in that game. The Cayman - drive it fast but way below its capabilities, then park it. Done.

Comparing the 911 and the 928 - different in every possible way, but similar in that I'm going to spend a lot of quality time with each. Starting with that "omega" spring.

Oh - here's a special thing on the 911 (the car lived in Vermont for a long time, and I live near Lake Placid):
