ok, for me and the other computer neophytes out there, what is the procedure, in layman's terms, to put a pic in our post? like every little detail, right from the scanner to the bbs. i'm getting a headache trying to figure this out. it can't be this difficult. like what's copy and paste? what's the little green code and what do you do with it?

Hi Jon,
Start a new post with one sentence.( See Porsche go ) Copy- first you have highlight the new sentence-Push the left hand button on your mouse down and drag it acrooss the new sentence(See Porsche go). This makes the words a highlighted Dark blue shadow color. When they are this blue color then go to the toolbar( words on the top of the screen) to the word that says "EDIT". Click on edit then some other words come up, one is "copy" and one is "paste".Click on "copy". This means the computer remembers your few words. delete or erase "see Porsche go", then start a new sentence. When you're a few words into the new sentence go up to the toolbar, click on "edit" and then click on paste. The words the computer remembers will appear as part of your sentence. Try this and the we're half way there. Mrdi |

I have a question that falls in with JW's picture size? What settings or parameters should I use for scans to get a photo that is large enough and has decent image quality, and still under 50k file size??

A 4x6 photo, scanned at 150 dpi, 24-bit true color saved as a .jpg should give you what you're looking for. Some apps will allow you to select the quality level of the .jpg compression which will trade off file size for image quality. You can play with this setting to get the size below 50k.
If you're having trouble getting the size below 50K, email me what you've got and I'll give it a try. williamkrause@icqmail.com ------------------ Bill Krause '79 911SC Euro |

50K is pretty big. The photo of that nice Turbo-bodied 911 is 45K in size.
Just trying to limit the size of the photos so that we don't go balistic for the modem users, and also balistic on the bandwidth on the server... Good description on how to post pics... -Wayne |

I use JASC Photoshop 7 for all photo editing jobs, it allows 1 button resizing to reduce to the 50k limit, the photo above was originally ~300k. Picture It also is reccommended by folks whose opinion I respect. I also have Adobe Photoshop 5 which allows a 2 step pixal reduction (both pixals and size are independanly done) but have found it cumbersome and difficult to get a good copy, it also likes its own .psd file format(rather than .jpg which is the best format to use). This can be a pain. Try to stay away from .gif as it is more limited in its color depth, often leaving a surreal and or grainey effect to the pic.
You are also going to be limited by the quality of your scanner. I have found it difficult to get good quality and large sizes from scanned images. I use a 5yr HP which is a dinosaur compared to newer ones so maybe thats the problem. Best images come from a digital camera all of mine are either from a Nikon 950 !$750 or a Canon S100 ~$420. I really like the Canon, its small size mean that I have it with me much more often. |

To make it possible for forum participants to access a picture-laden thread, please limit the dimensions of your uploaded scans. With my 52K dial-up modem, it takes forever to access the contents of a thread when it's filled with giant photos (really unnecessary). I actually bypass the long threads and go on to something I can see right away. Have you ever been to a website where the home page takes minutes to load? People tend not to stick around too long if the page is more than 60k in size or so.
Compose your digital files to no more than 72 dpi (this is the best a computer monitor can resolve) and a "comfortable" image width of around 600 pixels. Bill Verburg's silver targa is 672 pixels wide and 72 dpi. Big enough, sharp enough, and it's 48k in size. For comparison, Jen's picture is 1334 pixels wide. People prefer not having to scroll to see the entire image. In addition, use the jpeg compression format for halftones (read photographs) or any image with continuous tones in it. Jpg provides several different compression formats; more compression = smaller file size = less color/detail. Use the gif format for images that contain only solid colors with no color gradations. For example, the message icons are all gif formatted art (e.g. line art). I hope this helps, Sherwood Lee http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars |

And also: do not upload an image with spaces in its file name. Change:
porsche 968- side.jpg to: porsche968-side.jpg Before you try inserting it into the post. Those of us who use Netscape can not view posts with images that have spaces in the file names. ------------------ Jack Olsen My Rennlist home page My Pelican Gallery page My Porsche Owners Gallery page [This message has been edited by JackOlsen (edited 06-10-2001).] |

I have mentioned this in other graphics/pic threads, but just in case someone missed it ...
Anyone with digital camera or scanner software that came 'bundled' with them, and unhappy with the capabilities or difficulty using the package, and no intention of spending $100 or more on commercial graphics software ... should get the FREE download of Irfanview at the link below: http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,,000ABJ,.html Because it is a very small program, 630K, it loads incredibly fast, and takes up minimal disk space. It also can be used to crop out unneeded background area out of pics, and JPG compression can be varied as an option during a 'Save As' file operation. I can reduce a scanned image from my 10-year old HP Scanjet IIc scanner that started out as a 2.0 MB file down to under 50K very easily in under five minutes in four or five 'experimental' saves in a Irfanview 'Save As' operation varying the compression ratio! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |
