Unhappy Windshield wiper problem

I got caught in the rain recently in my 85 911 to find that the wipers stop wherever they are when I move the lever to off. In otherwords they do not park themselves, I have to time them just right to get them to lay flat when I flip the handle. As I don't often drive in the rain I don't remember this to be "normal". Any ideas? Thanks, DT

I had the same problem many years ago on my first vehicle a 67 Plymouth. If I remember correctly there is a "park switch" located in the wiper motor that stops the wipers at the "end" or "begining" of the ww cycle. In newer cars this may be controlled by an external relay. But my guess it is in the sealed ww motor itself.

there's a park switch in the wiper switch, which consists of two flat strips that are pushed together when the switch is turned off. no contact, no park. and the intermittents won't work either. remove the switch, leave the wires alone, and if you operate it a few times, you will see the contacts moving. a slight tweek is usually all it takes. saves replacing the switch.

Hey J.W., Would these be the same contacts to check if the intermittent switch makes the wipers go back and forth at low speed? My wipers work on low, high, and they park just fine. Just when I turn the rotary intermittent switch-they go to low speed no matter what position it is rotated to.

intermittents only work on one speed. if they work, the contacts are ok.

Huh? Let's try again: a different way this time. When I turn the rotary intermittent knob- the wipers swipe at the SAME speed as if I used the stalk at its' 1st position. NO PAUSE BETWEEN SWIPES!!!

in that case i would think the intermittent relay was the culprit.

Intermittent relay? Let me guess - it's one of the ones mounted on the bulkhead behind the brake fluid reservoir that I can't get my hand even near to...

Unrelated question = why doesn't pulling my fuel pump fuse (position 6 in the 21 fuse main bank)disable the fuel pump (I still hear the high pitched whine - that is the fuel pump noise, isn't it?)? Has the PO been monkeying around with my electrics?

the relay is between the wiper motor and fresh air fan. can't get to it without moving the fan.
carrera fuel pumps are powered by the relay that turns on the computer. it's black plastic and it's under your seat.

If the intermittent works and it doesn't park, what else could cause that?

and once again, thanks much for the info. By the way, where is the relay for the intensive cleaning feature located? Although the regular washer works (sort, of - clog on the drivers side hose), the intensive cleaning switch produces nothing on either side. It could be another clog, but I can't hear any pump operating so I suspect it's the delay relay.

BTW, you were right about the heater blower motor relay; power in, nothing out. What is it with these relays? Age, design or infrequent use?
