Happy Super Bowl Sunday Pelicans!
I've pulled the front hubs from my '83SC, and I am wondering if the races need to be pulled for new replacements as I am putting in new bearings. See pics, they look pretty pristine, but thinking they need to be "matched" if you know what I mean. Thanks, Pelicans! |

Yes, or the uneven wear of the old races will wear the new bearings uneven.

Change them. It really isn't that hard.

Heat and freezer will make it easy.

I'm convinced - both that the races should be replaced...and that the Pelican community is the best around! Thanks guys!

Truth is, these bearings rarely ever wear out. Clean up and repack the old rollers, replace the grease seal and reassemble.

It's not about wear. For as universal as they may be dimensionally they may differ by a degree or two in the taper. You may not "see" it but manufacturers "match" rollers, cages, races to all come together and load properly. The new rollers may be at a slightly different angle than the old "undamaged " race and you'll only know after they've been on a few dates.
Not worth it - they're sold as a set and should be replaced as a set.

Clean the hub very well, wait until the wife isn't home, and bake at 350° in the oven until golden brown. (Just get them hot.) The races will come out very easily. If they don't, crank the heat a bit higher and let them heat up longer. If you didn't get the hubs real clean you may need to open some windows so your wife won't smell anything.
![]() You put the new races in the freezer and they will literally drop into place in the hot hub. Aluminum expands 3 times as fast as steel when you heat it so the heater and freezer will make a big difference in the clearance for installation. Races and bearings are machined to go together so you want to keep sets together.
