You're enjoying this aren't you Jack!!!

Looks like she's coming on a treat, have you got an ETA on the finished product yet?

Cheers

85eurocarrera 01-17-2003 02:38 PM

What kind of gun is he using that it allows him to be able to shoot outside of the booth? Project looks great btw.
Joe

KevinP73 01-17-2003 02:46 PM

I'm using my SATA . AQMD allows me to shoot a limited amount of primer (water based) outside of the booth. I'm working in front of a work station with a filtered vent system running. When it comes time to shoot the final color I'll have the car in the booth (or I'll turn the camera off!!).

85eurocarrera 01-17-2003 02:50 PM

Kevin
Didnt mean to come across as the paint police ;-). Just wondering how you kept the overspray down.
Joe

KevinP73 01-17-2003 02:59 PM

with the HVLP gun, low air pressure (29lbs) and the workstation vent running, overspray is kept to a minimum. but anything of real value is either covered or taken outside during primer.

Ray 911s 01-17-2003 06:20 PM

And so the obvious implication relative to the 914 is?

(just kiddin' around)

I love watching, and wish I could bring my car to you, Kevin.

slammed1000 01-17-2003 09:06 PM

kevin, you guys are fast....not to many people can acomplish what has been done to jacks car in this kind of time frame. i would hate to know what your bill is going to be but it will be sweet forsure!

PAP smear 01-17-2003 10:02 PM

Jack, it's not too late to change you mind about the color.

I'd say, paint it Speed Yellow, Ferrari Fly Yellow or Orange. Just like Orange Crate of the mid sixties.

Hope Kev dosen't smear the paint!

The 914 is setting on a jet ski stand and a couple of saw horses. Far too difficult to move !! Besides it's in the early stages of construction. I really should have covered it though.

Just trying to visualize, here:

I love the "Primer Cam"!

nick-moss 01-20-2003 05:14 AM

Jack

Maybe I've missed a thread or two, is this the same car?

Jack Olsen 01-20-2003 09:55 AM

One's replacing the other. The pretty one one the right got, well, dented at Laguna Seca.

nick-moss 01-20-2003 09:59 AM

Well it seems you got as many condolences as Princess Diana, but your car was prettier. It has inspired me to build up a '70 E that I am negociating on at the moment.

BTW the crash page is not there anymore

bender (the server) is pretty ill right now, as am I (damn flu). I will be in tomorrow and swap over to another machine.

Much like BB2, bender2 will be better than ever...although it will have the same name.

Sarah 01-20-2003 01:13 PM

wow...it's really coming along nicely!

Jack Olsen 01-20-2003 02:09 PM

Of course, there's a lot of sanding involved.

Adam 01-21-2003 01:16 PM

Is that BB1 in the background right now?

Jack Olsen 01-21-2003 01:53 PM

No, that's Hans Stoehr's car. It's a backdated SC with a recently rebuilt 3.0. It weighs in at about 2100 pounds, thanks to lots of fiberglass and Lexan. He's the guy who graciously towed BB1 the 7 hours back from Laguna Seca after the crash. I got to drive his car (while watching BB1 on the trailer ahead of me), and it convinced me to go with fiberglass in the new version of the car.

His hood flipped up and shattered a couple of weeks ago, and he used BB2's hood for an event at Willow Springs, coming in 2nd in his class.

Adam 01-21-2003 02:01 PM

With your new hood are you going to have race-pins or those traditional RS/RSR style rubber hood holders?

Jack Olsen 01-21-2003 02:19 PM

Neither. I plan on using the good ol' fashioned factory latch.

Wouldn't want the thing to look like a 'race car,' would I? ;)

nick-moss 01-21-2003 02:21 PM

Don't you have to have a bonnet pin to scrutineer in the US?

beamonk 01-21-2003 03:30 PM

Just checked the earthcam, where is your car Jack? I do not see how you are able to work, I check the cam 3-4 times a day at work. It must be nice to be at a shop that actually will work on your car!
John:cool:

Jack Olsen 01-21-2003 04:18 PM

Nick: not in the groups I run with. I have a set of the tie-downs, though, if it ever comes up.

John: it's out in the sun, curing. And I don't get a whole lot of work done.

Jack Olsen 01-21-2003 05:44 PM

Hans was using the early-style tie-downs -- but he forgot to secure them. The factory latch has two levels of protection (and nothing to clutter up the look of the hood).

Hey Jack - I'm behind a firewall here at work, and cannot watch the progress. Any chance you could post the occasional screen cap?

It looks like either the front bumper is being fitted, or he's working on installing the ducting for the front AC vent. The new car came with dealer-installed air, which meant no cutaway in the front hood for the condenser fan. We've cut one out from a 73, and it's going to get welded in.

arcsine 01-22-2003 10:12 AM

G*&D#@^% firewall. I am still getting the image I posted earlier. I thought I was helping but I guess I am not. Sorry.

Mark Wilson 01-22-2003 10:13 AM

Jack,
Love watching the progress. I'm trying to get a handle on the order of the re-assembly. Can you give a rundown of the schedule after the paint and when you expect to be back on the street.
Mark

Mark Wilson 01-22-2003 10:28 AM

DDP

Jack Olsen 01-22-2003 11:09 AM

Yup, condenser shroud:

JeremyD 01-22-2003 11:57 AM

Jack, how the hell do you get anything done? I would be looking slack jawed at my computer screen all day!

Jack Olsen 01-22-2003 03:46 PM

I don't get anything done. I'm already a week late on a project I've got to turn in, and it looks like it's going to be another 10 days before I'm done.

Who cares. :p

I went by Kevin's shop today to drop off the last piece of trim. Here are two views of the still-being-sanded beauty:

Anybody got any 6-inch spacers I can use to fill out those rear fenders? ;)

Adam 01-22-2003 04:05 PM

Looks very smooth, Jack.

Kevin's testing out your cupholders in that first pic, eh? ;)
