911sc brakes .. stupid question of the day

Okay I actually got 10 years out of my brakes .. what can i say i don't drive it much ..
Anyway i just cant remember if the rotors on my SC are knock off or if i have to bugger around with bearing races. Coz i know you guys are going to tell me not to turn the rotors.

I must be getting old.

Thanks Guys .

Just knock them off with a rubber mallet. Wheel bearings are in the hub.

But you have to remove the hub anyway to get the rotors off. Good time to clean out the grease and freshen up the front wheel bearings with new grease. If the races look good down inside the hub? Leave the bearings alone. Front bearings on these cars are REALLY durable

Put a dial on the rotor to insure they are straight within an acceptable range, measure the thickness as well.

Same here. It's been a while but I don't remember it being a big deal.

Just did mine a few months ago. You do have to remove hubs.

A few months from now, I'll forget that and be back here searching and find my comment in this thread.

The hub has to come off. After 10 years it wouldn't hurt to re-pack the wheel bearings.

I just use a large drift/punch and a heavy hammer to knock the cap off with opposite side strikes

+1, then grab with large pliars or your clamps.

Treat yourself to one of these:

Makes the re-packing much easier

Yeah the bearing packer is a nice tool to have for sure. I have one of the double cone ones like iceman's

Anyone else reading this, resist the urge to pile on the grease within the hub. It's just a waste of grease and makes more mess to clean up the next time you re-grease the bearings. You'd be shocked how little grease a tapered bearing needs to operate. Just make sure the bearing is fully packed and then swab some grease around the race surface and around the edges No need to fill the interior of the hub, nor the cap with grease.

Not unless you want to use that as your source for extra grease to add some more next time you're in there, since grease can tend to migrate as it warms up and breaks down (if using a conventional non-synthetic grease). I'd highly recommend a synthetic grease since it's less prone to breakdown/separation into paste & oil. The extra money spent on a synthetic grease pays off in longer interval between greasing and also reduces "weeping" of the grease. Most non-synthetic greases will separate a bit and that oil weeps out of the hub at the cap interface and then gets the hub all caked with dirt & brake dust.
