blinker/wiper problem

I recently replaced the battery for my 1986 Porsche Carrera coupe with a smaller optima battery. Now every time I turn on my blinkers the wipers go on... Anyone have any suggestions?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif

What happens when you turn on the wipers?

It probably does not have anything to do with the battery swap.
It is most likely the switch(s) on the steering column.
A very common issue.

Do a search here on fixing the wiper/turn signal switch. You could save yourself some money.

Could my problem be in the turner light flasher relay, or do I need a turner signal switch...The relay is relatively inexpensive compared to the signal switch...Has anyone else experienced this problem?

por86, try pulling the flasher relay and see if the issue goes away. If it does chances are that it's the relay. If that has no effect, take the wiper switch out of the circuit and see what happens. Warren

I had a similar problem with my old 86 targa. I pulled the steering wheel off and inspected the turn signal switch. I could see that it was broken inside, so I just replaced it. In my case I doubt it could be fixed, perhaps it could have been glued back together, but to me, it was easier to replace the switch, and only have to do it once. Time is money too.

Sounds like a poor ground problem. When a particular circuit has a poor ground, it will "seek" a ground through any "back circuit" way it can. Hard to explain, but it causes weird problems like yours. I had your same symptom with the blinkers and wipers. I spent hours tracing, disconnecting, and metering wires till I located the marginal (floating) ground. As it turned out, I had poor grounding where the bundle of ground wires attach to the body/fender,right next to the battery. I cleaned all the wire connecters in the bundle, and the problem disappeared. Check in Bentley manual for a grounding point diagram, and clean up all the ground points in the front part of the car.
I wouldn't start throwing expensive parts at this problem hoping to fix it, you need to determine that a part is truly defective by troubleshooting before you waste a lot of money!

Do the intermittent wipers work? Is the switch in the off position?

Did you ever find the cause of this issue? I just started having this issue this morning.
