Help with VDO Guage

The other day my odometer stopped working and I just assumed it had the infamous broken gear issue. So I ordered the gear from Pelican and started the project tonight.

Upon inspection the gear appears to be fine. I suspect it was replaced years ago when I had sent off the gauges to convert them to LED.

So now I'm stumped on what the problem might be. I can hand turn the worm gear on top of the small electric motor and see the odometer working. Anyone have ideas on what else's I can check while I have it apart? I suspect it could be the circuit board or the small electric motor but I don't know how to test or even what those parts are called. I have searched unsuccessfully for a diagram or listing for them.

Anyone any ideas on what to do next? Otherwise, I think I might have to ship off to a repair shop.

Thanks in advance for your help

How is the solder joint on the green signal wire?

Then check the other suspects, ground connector, tunnel connection and the sensor itself.

If the speedo is working, the sensor is good and signal is getting to the instrument. Like you say, it is likely either the motor, the wiring to the motor or the board that controls the speed of the motor. Looks like it may be a job for North Hollywood. Cheers

Thanks for the replies, I ended up just doing a little cleaning on the gears and making sure everything seemed to be adjusted properly. I then tested the gauge back in the car. Amazingly it began to work again. I suspect if might have just gotten stuck or the problem is now going to be intermittent. If it happens again I'll just send it to North Hollywood, but for now all's good!

East Coast VDO repair shop.

Nichols Speedometer & Instruments - Speedometers, Tachographs, Service and Repair North Carolina

They did my gauges. Not a full blown custom shop a' la' N. Hollwood. More along of a repair shop, but fast and fair.

Thanks for the tip. Last time I used N. Hollywood it was really expensive so I was not looking forward to another bill. I will add this company to my notebook.

I have always felt that NHO is reasonable for the high quality repairs I have gotten. No way am I interested in experimenting with someone new......just my experience and opinion.
