Weltmeister Spring Plate Problem

Anyone ever have problems with defects on the Weltmeister Adjustable Spring Plates. I was putting mine on yesterday as part of a complete suspension rebuild and found the left outer plate was very poorly machined. The torsion bar will not go in and many of the splines are heavily burred and some are almost flat.

I am just wondering if I should be worried about the quality of their products.

Also, did anyone alse have to trim down the bushings at all to get them to fit correctly? It seems that all of the bushings were a little to big and would not go together without a little shaving.

You must trim the plastic bushings for you application. Some use a lathe..others sand them down. Can't help you with the adjustable spring plates though.

Not to take attention away from our gracious host...Pelican but the Smart Racing guys have an excellent "how too" for poly bushings. Go into the performance parts, then into suspension section. Scroll down to find the bushings and it'll give you a good understanding as to how to install them.

Depending of the torsion bars, some slip in easily and others need the OD reduced slightly for the torsion bar splines to mesh. If the splines on you springplates are not correct, perhaps it is a machining problem and should be returned to the vendor, assuming they are new. If they are used, the PO could of jammed a set of torsion bars in without doing the previous reduction mentioned.

The bushings OD almost always need reduced to fit the housing of the car and spring plate covers. Easiest method I've used is to fit the bushing to a power drill by using a hole saw bit and building it up with tape to fit snuggly. Then apply the spinning bushing against a course sheet of sandpaper to gradually grind off the outer portion. Go slowly and cool the bushing completely before trial fitment.

When I put their spring plates on many years ago I ran into the same problem with the splines. The plating that was applied to the spline area messed up the fit big time. I had to take small needle files and clean up the plating on the splines to get them to fit the torsion bars. As far as the bushing - I did what the others did to get them to fit. Sand - check fit, Sand - check fit ...........
