- When you screw in mounting point 3 it makes mount point 1 stick out past the fender. Simply flex the bumper back in and screw in mounting point 1 and 2.

- So I think the steps I did are shown as 1 and 2, then 3, then back to 4 and 5 in the pic:

Scott,
Did you have to remove your oil tank to fasten screw #3?

Scott, how does the hood close against the 964 smile? Does it pin the lip down on the smile?

Did you have any problems with the hood closing correctly, as a result of the screw heads sitting up too high?

My hood pinned down the smile (just a little bit). The lip goes over the front edge of the fenders.

No problems with the hood closing correctly. The screw heads sit behind the area where the hood seals against the smile. Plus the screw heads are pretty shallow.

Nope. I think I removed the rear tail light housing or used a few ratchet extensions and came up underneath the back corner under the bumper. I can't remember which but I didn't have to remove the oil tank.

It's tight in that area...

KTL 03-19-2008 05:35 AM

It's tight in that area to remove the original rear bumper extensions. Can't imagine the fiberglass rear being too much more difficult. I'll find out soon enough............

Thanks again for the great pics of attaching the 964 smile. Very helpful!!!!

at one point there was a group buy for the RUF front bumper with brake vent holes instead of the fog light openings.

is this still available?

Wavey 05-14-2008 01:26 PM

I doubt if the group buy price is still available, but B&W is still making them, and brake ducst are available. Last summer I had Brad change mine to brake ducts from foglamp holes, and he was working on a couple of sets going to England.

Kemo 05-15-2008 07:55 AM

B&W? is this BW motorsports? thx

KTL 05-15-2008 09:10 AM

Yes. It's Brad at BW Motorsports in O'Fallon IL you need to talk to.

I just received some nerf bars for the front and rear so i'll post some pictures when I get a chance.

Really? Post pics! Do it soon! :)

How much?

Not that driving in traffic with fiberglass bumper caps makes me nervous or anything...

KTL 05-16-2008 01:40 PM

Here's the nerfs. They're pretty simple and cost $175 from Souk thru BW Motorsports. Souk mentioned that Brad at BW is losing his guy who fabricates these, so it'll be tough for him to source more.

The first pic is the rear nerf. As you can see it's basically a piece of angle steel with the ends "radiused" with a cut piece of steel welded into the angle. The front bumper shocks are used at the rear due to their shorter length. You can either drill holes in the angle or weld to attach the nerf to the bumper shocks

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1210973838.jpg

The second pic is the front nerf. It's already got "shocks" built into it and it's mostly a straight bolt-on. The front nerf I have was a bit narrow so I had to spread the bar out a bit. I just stood on one end and pulled up. :D The fact that I could open the bar up a bit to get it to fit tells us that these nerfs obviously are only going to provide protection for light impact on the bumpers. Any sort of crash at cruising speed and these bars aren't helping you much......

James Brown 05-20-2008 02:47 PM

the guys at Better Bodies are throwing in a free set of nerf bars if you buy the YB front and rear bumper for $ 949.00. I'm thinking hard about it now!

Wavey 05-22-2008 06:04 AM

Thanks for posting the pics and comments Kevin! You mention the front has "shocks" - I assume they're just tubes? I'm thinking some staggered holes could make them more effective as crush tubes. I think I'll contact Brad today and see if he has any sets left before he loses his fab guy.

This is terribly embarassing to admit, but I bought my bumpers from Brad the year we did the group buy. They're still hanging in my shop, 5 years later! I did do the wheels, exhaust and got the suspension and brakes rebuilt during that time, so I guess it's not all bad. Stupid business and family keep getting in the way of my fun! :)

KTL 05-22-2008 06:38 AM

Dave,

Yes, they're just tubing. No shock safety in them. I don't think the tubes will effectively crush if impacted. The bend in the flat stock between the tubes and the square stock actually touches the chassis, and the flat stock is not all that rigid.

My front bar was a bit too narrow and I had to spread it open by standing on it and pulling up. I'm only 6'-0" and 165lb. I don't have incredible hulk strength so I don't think the nerf is a significant safety benefit. If something hits the square bar, it's going to push it into the chassis tub by bending the flat stock.

You just loss, Dave. :) I thought for sure you'd have you bumper(s) on before I got mine on.

I have to fix my home computer in order to load pictures of my installation, but my front bumper has been fitted, and it's at the paint shop.

I was going to use the stock bumper smile with the bumper, but the bumper was made to be used without the smile, so I would have had to section about 1/4" off (and re-glass) the flange that bolts/screws to the nose of the tub.

I still have to add a rubber lip on the bottom, but I'm in a rush to make it to the track this weekend, so it'll have to wait. One of the local guys wants a splitter or canards on his bumper, so maybe I'll form a splitter over the winter for us and not need the rubber lip.

I'm using the stock rear bumper, but doing something with it so I didn't need the rear glass bumper. I'll retain the impact protection in the rear with the stock bumper...and adding some "equipment" that will make for expensive crush zone filler ;)

Funny thing is that I remember I wasn't going to do the CTR conversion to my '76 some time after this all started, because it was going to take too much work to get all the window trim to what a Carrera looks like. I told someone I was going to just wait until I bought a Carrera one day to do the CTR conversion it. That someone is Kevin! I don't know if you recall Kevin.....LOL! And Kevin even helped me shop for my Carrera!

So 5 years and 8 months.....and this thread has come full circle. LOL!

Wavey 09-30-2008 05:30 AM

Damn Souk, you beat me! Just shows how much more competitive you are than me :D

Can you use a 964 smile?

I was also thinking about fabbing a splitter, instead of the rubber lip. Great minds... What material are you thinking of using? I was thinking waterjet-cut aluminum plate, maybe do a couple so I'd have a spare. Although with something that rigid, an impact would probably bust the f/g, so I was also thinking about some sheet PVC material we use in the shop.

Actually we just wrapped up wedding # 2 this year (both daughters got married this Summer) so the bumpers are my next project. I think the work schedule is going to work out so I'll have space in the shop to leave the 911 on jackstands for a month or two. I'll be doing the early Carrera tail and maybe refinishing the hood at the same time. Also hope to install my replacement rear polybronze and do some other small jobs while it's off the road.

BTW, I had Bruce rework my front bumper for brake ducts rather than foglamps. He did a nice job - looks great.

Post some pics ASAP! Good to hear from you.

175K911 09-30-2008 10:31 AM

Hey Souk, some of the original bumpers are on their 2nd owners already...

Like my car. As you know, these bumpers were part of the original GB, and were on YermanCars' 911 until I picked them up. Not trying to give you a hard time (oh, sure I am), but just looking for an excuse to post a pic of my car.

If you think you'll need to add a lower lip, I have some McMaster Carr 0.21" belting left from doing mine. I needed it at VIR, but I really don't think the speeds at BHF are high enough to need it. But I'd be happy to hand it over to you this evening or tomorrow evening if you want to try it.

When you get back and start thinking about the front splitter/ canard let me know. I'm thinking about trying to fab a pair of small side canards for VIR in November. Car was fine with just the lower lip on the pit straight (130+) but got a bit light on the long back straight.

Just to give you motivation as you work many hours each night this week. And in case you decide to try to do the lip, that's a 2" reveal on my car.:

Wow. This thread was created back in early 2003?

Dave,

I have a 964 smile on my IROC bumper and it works well. Fitment is very good around the side perimeter and below the headlights. Fitment at the hood notsomuch. The seal has to be peeled back to open or close the hood, which is kind of cheesy. But it does look very good. The other thing I don't like is it doesn't sit entirely flush atop the bumper because the underside of the smile has a raised surface that makes the smile hover a bit above the surface of the bumper. I'm thinking of taking my smile off, so you're welcome to borrow it this winter for a test fit to see if you like it.

Soukus is not messing around for the track days this coming weekend! Ruf bumper, suspension mods, custom-tweaked rear bumper with expensive "filler" (should I expect to see a turbo on that engine?),...... he's pulling out all the stops. I better be ready to throw down!!!

Be ready to throw down the laughs! I'm rusty as a 15 yr old midwest deck nail w/r to track driving. I'll be luck if I make it home without crunching my car....but no way I'm I going to wussy foot it around the track....I'm going out in a blaze of glory man! LOL!

Nope, no fancy bits behind the car for Octoberfest...just the same mods you cats have been running under your cars while I've been running worn out stock bits :p

I may take you up on that offer after this week, Ed.

I actually dozed off last night while taking a break...called it a night after I snapped out of it...LOL!

Thanks very much Kevin, but I got a used one here a couple of years ago so I'm good. Interesting comments about the fit - I'd expect mine would fit the same way. Hmmmmmm...
