Looks good Souk! When is the rear bumper going on?
|
What's up with the A/C hoses? I thought you were pulling that stuff out of the car?
Looks good with the Fuchs. Don't put the steelies back on- evar. |
Mike - I'm not doing the rear bumper cap. Instead I'm making a bumper extension that will get rid of the bellows. I've got other plans for the rear too.
Kev - I had second thoughts about tearing out the AC since I want to be able to use the car in the summer too. Otherwise, it'll never see enough miles for me to keep it....esp. if original recipe "Bastard" rides again in the spring. I might still do it, but I think I'll give you and Stefan a good run for your money even with the extra weight ;) |
for DE's why would you bother to remove AC? I can't count all the times AC saved me on the ride home from a H/H/H 90+ day, I do remmember well the one day that the AC failed me, talk about ugly....
|
That's why I love my targa, take the top off and instant A/C!!
|
Always the joker! Just remember the bar has been set pretty good- high 1:22's & low 1:23's. Is the FB capable? We shall see!! I gots more tricks up my sleeves this winter. Be ready to rumble next spring my friend!!!:D |
No excuses next year Kev :)
Since I can't sleep tonight...how about some detailed pictures of the front bumpers... I cut a plastic decklid grill just like Bill did for the front grill. I had it painted with the same paint when they did the bumper. I wanted a monochromatic look. (sorry for the bug splatter on the bumper...casualties from our Trip'n Fall Run) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1224495336.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1224495393.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1224495405.jpg Here's what came off the front... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1224495439.jpg |
Those bugs never had a chance Souk......very clean install. I also enjoyed the suspension write up too particularly the budget aspect.
Thanks, Scott |
Thanks, Scott.
Additional notes on installation of the bumper: Notice the four holes on the tub just under the lip of the hood, in the above picture with the car on the lift. After the stock parts are removed, those holes should be used to mount the bumpers. The flange on the F-glass bumper should be just about right to drill through, leaving enough f-glass between the hole and the lip/edge of the flange. If there isn't enough f-glass, it'll probably crack. If that's the case, you might have to glass a bit onto the bumper. I also used a strip of aluminum flat stock (3/4" wide by 1/8th or so (bought at the ACE hardward store) as a backing strip to sandwich the f-glass bumper to the tub. It should prevent the holes in the f-glass from cracking and pulling through from the bolt/screw holding it in place. I used the stock fender screw clips and screws to mount the bumper to the fenders. Because the f-glass bumper is thinner than the factory smile I stacked a couple of washers between the head of the screws and the bumper. This is important just under the headlights otherwise the tip of the screws will go through the undercoating and paint...allowing rust to form later. Four or five screws on each fender will do it. I intend to make an aluminum backing strips for these areas also. It will help the f-glass to mate flatly to the fender without any waviness while providing support to the bumper so it doesn't crack at the drill holes. Also, because the bottom/lip of the bumper curls up, it will hold water when you wash it or when driving in a heavy rain storm. I intend to drill drain holes on the bottom (not visible from normal viewing points) at the lowest points on each side of the grill opening. |

Mike,
I'll probably use some undercoating material to coat the backside of the bumper too. I asked the painter to paint the back of the bumper too, but it was a half-arse attempt. So I'll seal/cover the backside when I remove the bumper to address some of the surface rust I didn't have time to address during my mad rush to try and make Octoberfest. |

We also need to get that lower lip mounted on your car. Will add some stability and hide that crusty condensor guard. FWIW- recall when I did mine I started with a 2.5" reveal and thought it was too low and redrilled for a 2" reveal? Well, going back to 2.5". The heavy belting I used didn't deflect one bit at the track (pics at 120'ish show it not bending at all.) |
I guess I just need to use my side driveway as a drag strip and brake test strip after a wash. It'll be more fun than drill drain holes :D
Yep, a lip will be nice to hide the guard. I do plan to paint the bar, but you know the story... I've already hit it on driveways a couple of times, so the lip will have to be short so it doesn't drag and pull down on the bumper when I bottom out on it. I've had the car up above 120 MPH, and there was no sense of the front end going light, so the lip would be more for asthetics...with a physical benefit. I'll take it :) |
Souk, Are you still selling BW stuff? I'm going to do the Ruf Valance and I think BW makes them. Do you know for sure?

A couple of years ago, I decided to replace the bumpers on my 1989 UK spec Carrera Sport 3.2. Having realised that achieving a full pre-impact bumper retro look would be too difficult and expensive, I surfed the web and found this thread, which I read in full and vowed to proceed with the RUF CTR solution. Surprisingly, I could only find 1 UK supplier, of dubious quality, so I duly approached Brad at BWMotorsport as he appeared to be the preferred supplier in the US. He was very helpful and eventually provided me with a pair, plus the nerf bars around Easter '07 (fortunately, the exchange rate at the time was favourable).
However, I didn't get started last year as I had a trip to France in the car during the summer and then other things got in the way. Finally, a year later, I got going and, of course, discovered other jobs underneath the car that required attention, including a bit of rust, so I did a more thorough restoration job and got it on the road again around the end of September. I am delighted with the end result and have attached a couple of pictures - I have never seen another 911 with CTR bumpers in the UK. I had few problems installing them as they were a pretty good fit, and I did use the nerf bars underneath, albeit with custom made support tubes at the rear, as the Porsche (front) originals didn't line up too well, plus some aluminium sheeting to provide a heat shield between the bumper and exhaust. As my car is UK spec, I don't need the additional (rearmost) turn signals at the front, so I just fitted smoked aftermarket lenses in the holes, which I think looks rather better than the US-style double set of lights. I opted to use the 964 'smile' at the front which works well, although it does sit up a bit - there is presumably a slight recess in the 964 bumper - and was actually a fraction too long, so I had to cut about 3/8" out of the middle and bond it back together. I also fitted very small aftermarket LED rear number plate lights and spaced them to suit my own numberplate. So, many thanks to all the contributors to the thread - I found out pretty well all I needed to know to do the job from therein. Hope you approve of the end result. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1225034208.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1225034262.jpg |
