Great thread!

While I'm here, I made this pic' of my car last week:

Sadly I changed the original Ruf steering wheel for this prototipo...

I have this RUF Horn pad I'd consider selling if someone wants to make an offer:

Something worth mentioning to the North American crew.

I THINK, I may have an idea of where this badge is from. A client of mine recently sent me some photos of a 964 which has some RUF bits on it. The car started life in Japan, made it's way to Canada and now is in the PNW. It's got the usual wing/steering wheel/18" wheels installed and it looks great.

Then I saw it on the dash, the exact badge you have here, although in perfect condition. I would put my money on a dealer in Japan putting some dress up RUF kits on cars and adding this dash to make the cars a little special.

Just a thought, but I bet I'm not far off!

Damon of Series 900 can reproduce new shrouds. He does all colors and has produced them for Porsche for a restoration.

One more thing. The Ruf shroud is painted so getting a new one is optional. You can re-paint the one you have.
The Series 900 shrouds are made "in color". If it's red, it's red all the way through and the same holds true for all colors.

BTW: Guards Red paint is not correct for any "red" fan shroud if anyone goes that route. Early '67-'68-S were more burgundy than red and the '69 on shrouds are red-orange.
The red below the shroud illustrates the differences.

Excellent build! I'm sure most of us here would love to own a true RUF, but that's just wishful thinking for most! :) In case you're looking for final touches, check out our newly revamped Accessories section for your DIY needs....keep those pictures coming though!

I have some space in the front of a project car that I need to cover up but unfortunately, eBay wasn't too helpful - hence me coming to you guys for help!

Does anyone know of a source that I can order the plastic grill insert that is commonly used in the Ruf style front spoilers, such as the center one illustrated in this pic? I have searched high and low, but can only find diamond/hexagonal/circular patterns, rather than a horizontal and understated + classic looking grill insert.

Your help is very much appreciated!

Those are usually made from the Carrera rear deck grilles. They're plastic and cut like butter. You just have to fabricate a couple of mounting bars.

This for sale ad shows how Ruf originally did it

The bumper pictured above is Bill Verburg's & has a grille like Wavey describes

Looking back to several pages of this thread, I don't see any posts on internal bumper supports. Is this a concern when taking out the original 911 bumpers and adding on the Fiberglass Bumper Covers?

Yes there is legitimate concern by removing the original bumpers and replacing with fiberglass or polyurethane. The original bumpers have impact absorbing shocks (USA cars) or crush tubes which attach the bumpers to the chassis tub. So a light impact to the aluminum bumpers provides some energy absorption and impact protection.

The fiberglass bumpers are a do-it-yourself figure out how to attach them. Do a search on the forum and you'll see all sorts of methods people have come up with to fasten them to the car. What that means is the fiberglass basically forgoes any crash protection and therefore an impact is going to get transferred directly to the chassis wherever the point of impact is at. That said, these cars get bent pretty good in a crash, even with the original bumpers in place

Folks have made their own "nerf bars" from scratch to provide some semblance of structure behind the fiberglass. But it's still a far cry from the original design. And the original design isn't exactly super high tech, which is rather caveman- like compared to the crash protection of more modern cars. Even the 964 body is leaps and bounds ahead of the old 911 crash worthiness.

Like KTL says, once all the OEM bumper parts have been removed, you can fabricate a steel "nerf bar" that bolts to the original bumper shock holes in the tub, and it sits inside the new FG bumper. Some impact protection but not a lot. This works for the front and rear. The FG bumper itself is a pretty rigid box structure once it's bolted to the tub and fenders. It can be bolted to both using the original holes at the front of the tub, and the holes at the bottom front of the fenders where the accordion pieces used to mount. It's actually really sturdy that way, doesn't need any bolts or brackets through the front face or along the bottom.

Thank You everyone, I finally have all the parts needed for the conversion. Going for a CTR / Porsche RS Theme on a cabriolet. Will post pictures of the progress. :)
