Rear View Mirror Questions

Interior rear view mirror fell off today.

1. I've tried Isopropyl alcohol, WD-40, Goo-Gone, paint thinner, lighter fluid. I don't have acetone or ammonia on hand. Do I really need to use either one or a razor blade to remove the remaining (I assume 27 year old) adhesive residue from the glass?

2. Should I buy a new button ($12 from our host) or should I try to remove the adhesive from the existing button?

Hi...I personally would scrape the old glue off with a razor blade and just re-glue it. Many companies make the product e.g. 3M

Agree, not rocket surgery. Also if the mirror fits the button without wiggling thats a plus. I got a replacement windshield recently and the mirror was wiggly at speed. Drove me nuts but I finally carefully crimped the female pocket on the button a bit and got the fit better. Keep what you have if its works. Any mirror glue from the flaps should be great. I think its just super glue.

I had luck with the specific adhesive that’s sold in the auto parts store… once.
Really needs to be clean on both the glass and the mount. Had another fall off after a few months and repeated adjusting and another that just wouldn’t stick under pressure from the mirror. There might be a better compound these days but ordinary glues for other applications might not be reliable.

Another option would be windshield replacement shop like SafeLite.

Not a new windshield - but I’d ask if they can remount the mirror, which they would do during a windshield install. They will have the good adhesive and cleaners !

When I replaced the windshield on my ‘83, I went to a mid-year rear view mirror. It uses 3M double stick tape to attach and the minting point’s surface area is double that of the disk. Much easier, no glue, IMO a better option.

I never noticed that my MidYear mirror had 3M double stick mounting tape. I can see the old spot or outline of glue on the replacement windshield, PO even had mirror fall off. So that 3M tape (real thin stuff too) has to be good, it been holding for 20 years according to service records.

My thoughts

Get all the glue off the glass, use the best JB weld, and use duct tape to keep the button in place. I've had many of the other glues give up, the JB weld is still hanging in their. Use their strongest and be sure to duct tape it in place for 24 hours.
