After 3 years my 77S now awesome!
I bought this 1977 S from California I got a good deal for it. The reason being the car would have been pita to get tagged in Cali because of their brilliant smog laws. I mean can you imagine how bad smog would be in Cali if they let all 1977 cars on the road!
I really lucked out because I really did not have a good idea what I was buying. It had either a 3.0 l or 3.2l, it was twin plugged and had headers and paint that was good enough at 10 feet and leather seats that had tears in them. Oh, and a ducktail. Of course when I got my hands on it, the first thing I did was most important, I had it repainted . Always better to look good than be good, right? The car always drove nice, but the tranny was starting to grind in 1st and 2nd, down shifting into second was slow if not impossible, it started without a problem but had a bad fuel accumulator and cv boot that needed to be replaced. I even took it to the track in this state, it was still fun to drive but getting it repaired was a low priority for my wife. I don't understand her, she kept talking about how we needed to pay for the kids school and home repairs, she acted like getting my 911 fixed did not matter. Women. Sometimes I just don't understand how they think, they just are not logical, the kids were fine the house does not need a roof, but my 911 needs love honey, what about my car! I still remember the time she was not happy with the recovered dash I got her for her birthday. Fast forward 3 years, I decided to fix the tranny my self with the help of the board and my cousin who is pretty good with a wrench and who has lift. I was talking to him on the phone about what we needed to do with my wife sitting next to me. We knew it was going to take probably a month. That is when my wife said just take it in and have Tom fix it, I guess honey, if you think I should. ![]() I have an awesome local mechanic, he dropped the engine tuned the car rebuilt the tranny replaced the cv boots replaced a cracked oil line and put it all back together for me for 1,300 bucks! less the tranny parts I bought a year and half ago and the SSI I bought locally for cheap. Anyway the car is now brand new to me, it is a new thing! My mechanic even figured out what kind of 911 motor I have. It is a twin plug early 78 SC 3.0L with electromotive crank spark, C4 cams, euro piston beast with CIS. It just screams through the gears now, 1st and 2nd are like liquid butter, get on it after 3k, you are ready to shift because you are now at 7k. And then after second your are in 3rd. The previous owner did a great job on the motor and the set up, the only flaw was the headers. Bigger is not better, Porsche is better. The headers were too big and the exhaust pressure too low, the SSI are just right, like an extra 50hp right. Funny thing about the SSIs, I only wanted them because the car had no heat. I had no idea it was going to take a fast 77S and turn it into a super fast 1977 S. I wish you all could drive it, but if your car is dialed in you know how right a 911 is, the feel is just something else. Hard to believe a 40 year old car can be that good. Here are some pics. to enjoy. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Thanks, it already had the Chrome, so aesthetically all I did was add a euro bumper and bumperettes and the chrome flags. The look I think fits better with the duck tail and is easy reversible.
My mechanic who is a former professional race car driver, says as it sits now my motor is maxing out my tires and brakes. I love it, it is a blast on the street, it is balanced right now, nothing to do to it but drive it. I have to re learn the car because of the difference in power right now. It looks like it's already been lowered to Euro height, and that chrome look brand new.
Congrats.

Looks like it still has an AC condenser but no AC compressor?
Looking good, I love my hot-rodded '76! |

yeah no AC, it was not working so I took out the compressor.
The only ac I have is the windows and the pop out rears. I drive about two miles to work so by the time even modern ac is working I'm home. Mid years I think make the best hot rods, the 2.7 engine with the thermos was just not that great. Hey lets take an air cooled engine and turn it into an oven! |

I have a question about your C4 cams...
What are they? Did you mean 964 cams? Were 964 C4 cams different than 964 C2 cams? How did your mechanic determine which cams you have? Presumably he would have to pull off a timing cover and sprocket to read the stamping on the end of the cam shaft. Alternatively, he could measure your lift and duration with a dial indicator and the try to figure it out but this would be time consuming. Any idea what pistons and CR you are running? A 3.0L is right on the edge of big header tubes / small header tubes depending on whether you want low end torque (small header tubes) or top end horsepower (big header tubes). Street cars benefit from low end torque whereas a track car needs top end HP.

Not sure about your cams questions, I will ask him the why about the cams and how he figured it out.
I'm running 11 to 1 euro pistons, and yep low end torque is exactly what I have in spades right now. |
