Whale Tail-Engine Lid Seal?
My '82 911SC has a whale tail that is slightly loose on one corner - if you lift the engine lid with the whale tail, one corner lifts up a few mm. It doesn't quite rattle ... yet!
As I understand it, you have to drop down the A/C condenser to gain access inside the whale tail to the nuts on the fasteners to tighten them. I don't see externally any evidence of a rubber seal between the whale tail and the lid. Somehow, it doesn't seem like a good thing for the fiberglass to bolt directly against the lid without a mating seal, OR, is it not supposed to be sealed for drainage purposes? My first inclination was to remove the tail and if no seal existed, either run a strip of butyl caulk or attach a weatherstrip before bolting it back down. BUT, I didn't want to "fix something that isn't broken" and maybe it's supposed to be that way? Where does water drain when it enters the whale tail? Any information appreciated! John |

There is a rubber strip that goes between the tail and the lid. Search turbo tail seal. Not that expensive.

John,
You are right! There should be a black plasticky seal along the bottom of the whale tail similar to the black seals that go between the rear quarter panel, and the rear bumper extension. You will have to take the tail completely off, and custom fit the seal. If I'm not mistaken, it must be riveted on from the bottom. I didn't install that seal, because I thought it looked better without the seal. |

You can search on Pelican for part number 93051221500.
The question is which of the three to get! Seems any of them would work.

The part # for the Carrera 3.2 tail base welting (Porsche calls this Hood Trim)
is 911.512.215.00 The welting is adhesive backed and pre cut with 'V' notches to allow bending at the corners. The corner areas are also typically pop riveted. When installing the seam should end up at the bottom center of the tail base. Cut the seal as long as possible to get the ends tightly butted together. Over time the seal will shrink and a gap will open up at the joint. Cooper |

That seal was a PITA! It comes with double sided tape pre-installed, but has a tendency to move a bit, which results in the black bead waving in and out from in between the tail and the deck lid, even with the bolts cinched down tight. The rivets are absolutely essential to prevent any movement, especially around the tight radii. I ended up buying a box of two piece low profile threaded aluminum rivets, and added a couple more on each side in addition to the factory locations. Worked like a charm—the bead is even and tight.

Agreed with Cooper on the joint opening up over time. Simple enough to close gap.
